I have a confession to make: I’m actually terrible about taking pictures of my own family.
Not because I don’t want pictures of my own family but I’m a photographer and, that means, somewhere along the way I convinced myself that if I’m going to take the “real camera” out, everything needs to be perfect.
The outfits. The light. The location. The dogs cooperating. The kid cooperating. All of it.
And so I wait and, ultimately, never take the pictures.
But the other evening, I grabbed my camera and followed JT and the dogs down to the creek behind our house. Nothing was planned, nothing matched, and nobody was perfectly posed. He just played, got wet, dirty, and did exactly what he always does.
And looking through these afterward, I realized these are the pictures I’m going to want someday - bruised fingernail and all -because this is what our life looks like right now.
There will always be a reason to wait: until you lose the weight, until the kids are a little older, until you find the perfect outfits, or until life settles down. But life doesn’t really settle down and none of us are promised how many “laters” we get.
So take the pictures now. Because someday, you might realize the imperfect moments were the perfect ones all along. 🩷
