Some reflections...

We three all live and operate in a blue city, a liberal state, a socially progressive city. With this understanding, walking into the performance art, the act of protest, of this project, we were all collectively startled by the realization that living in a “liberal city” does not directly translate to social acceptance of unexpected public displays of q***rness.

The first image in this post was our final shot which was taken in front of a large group of unassuming people, in transit, who watched and encouraged. From what we could tell, the encouragement came mainly from a man who vocalized support, and it was hard to parse through the nuisance of the moment, between whether he supported q***r love, or if he was fetishizing le***an affection. This brought up the topic of how le***an relationships, especially in moments of le***an PDA, are so commonly and vocally fetishized by cis-men at this point in this country.

Sophie, as a photographer, works with couples in public showing PDA quite frequently. It was shocking how much attention this shoot, which was virtually the same as an engagement shoot, garnered, compared to working with heteronormative couples on engagement shoots in public.

The verbal reaction we kept getting from folks on the street was “why are you doing this, what is this for”, rather than the typical “congratulations!” she hears people offer to hetero couples in public settings, engaging in similar acts of exhibition. Our takeaway is that communities can preach acceptance and allyship, but performative acceptance is not the same as practiced acceptance. So then, how do you tell where you are truly accepted?
