Last Friday, July 18, 2025, saw something that used to be taken for granted - Pan Am painted locomotives on the Rumford Branch. With the CSX takeover more than three years old, it is rare to see two Pan Am painted units on a single train anymore. Convinced by a friend to make the four hour round trip, the very last rays of the setting sun illuminate the hills in the background as these two ex CN wide cabs make their way down the branch.
Technical details: Nikon D5500, 1/125th of a second, F6.3, ISO 1600, 16 mm F2.0 Rokinon fixed lens, tripod mounted. Lighting by three generic speedlights with Godox triggers, stand mounted. Post processing in Lightroom and Topaz DeNoise. Enjoy!

Its been over three years since CSX took over Pan Am Railways. The general consensus was that the Guilford Rail System and Pan Am Railways painted units would disappear quickly. Many have - but not all. MEC 504, an ex CN GP40-2W rolls through the crossing at Rileys East last night on the Rumford Branch - under the watchful eyes of one still photographer (yours truly) and one videographer and the silent gaze of an abandoned house. 7/18/2025 - around 10 PM. Technical Details: Lighting by four stand mounted generic Speedlights - remote triggers by GoDox. Nikon D5500, tripod mounted, ISO 1600, F 6.3, 1/125 of a second, Rokinon 16mm fixed F2.0 lens, manual focus. Post processing in Lightroom and Topaz DeNoise. Enjoy!

No Right Turn....
I've been told that there are railroad crossings with that sort of light in other places, but, as far as I know, that one is unique to Maine. Located on one turn into French Island (Between Old Town and Milford, Maine) one knows not to turn right when the train is coming. With CSX L072, lead by SD-40-2 8883 lighting up the rail, I had no desire to turn right!

Its been just over a month since I got out to do any night photos, so, loading up the car with the Big Lights and my usual helper, it was out into the cold (3 to 9 degrees F) last night in pursuit of CSX L072. The goal was a Westbound shot in the town of Passadumkeag, Maine and I'm proud to say, NAILED IT! Here is the Westbound shot from last night!

Some days you just don't have the luck....
Night photography has its highs and lows - last night was a low. After hours of location scouting and waiting for a train to show up at said spot... I was disappointed. Not by the train, or the location, but by equipment failure. By the time the train arrived, I had four lights setup and a repeater to keep the signal level high. Despite this, only two lights went off when the train showed up. The image you see is a composite of two images, one was a pre-train test shot, the other the first shot when the train arrived. Considerable Lightroom filters, Photoshop editing and time was spent to even make this work. I just hope I manage to get the shot right the next time I'm in the area.

Technical Details: Nikon D5500 - Rokinon 16 mm F2.0 lens - Tripod Mounted - F5.6 - ISO 3200 - four (two or three of which fired depending on the shot) Neewer Speedlights with Godox CT-16 triggers.
Two exposures overlaid - plus additional filters and processing in both Photoshop and Lightroom - and Topaz DeNoise AI.
