With a horse, what you feel in your gut travels like pure energy from your core right out through your fingertips, down through your knees and into that animal. They can sense the whither or the rose, sometimes before it even dawns in your own mind. It's not so much about you riding a horse as it is about what's riding you.

At this week's Rising Rock RBC I witnessed two young ladies sort calves by pure willpower alone, their horses responding to the ebb and flow in real time, and those calves almost sorted themselves.

I saw a seasoned cowboy passing on his knowledge from decades of wrangling.

I saw Mom's and Dad's pouring themselves out for the equipping and enriching of the young souls entrusted to them.

I saw knees bow in prayer to give thanks out loud as grateful language passed the lips for safety.

I saw a young man overcome his fear and get right back on the bull that threw him down to the ground like Raggedy Ann.

I saw joy, tears, laughter, and hope. All from a little camping out together.

I saw courage in the face of adversity, and grace was laced through it all. To everyone at Rodeo Bible Camp this year, I would share this:

You are seen. You are heard. You are understood.

God sees you, and even if it's only ever for an Audience of One, He's what matters most, and it's enough.

This spring I saw candidate John Hansen sit down and sing a song publicly for the most vulnerable of all us, those who can’t stand up for themselves. For me personally, I knew then that’s the guy I want as my gov. That’s the heart I’m looking for.

One of mine was to a Mr. Harold Herr. A seasoned missionary who once showed a phenomenal act of kindness by picking my family up at the airport in Haiti years ago. That may sound simple, as around here that's only quick hop on the interstate. Harold left his mountain home by four-wheeler and then drove all across Haiti. Picked us up in the capital and drove us entirely across the the country, then drove back home. It took him an entire day from dawn to late night. When I asked him how I could ever repay that act of kindness, he said the most simple, humble, genuine, and wise words I've ever heard that have stayed with me for the rest of my life. He simply said: "Bow low before the Lord."

Life moves quickly. Before you know it, months or even years can pass since you've spoken with someone you care about. This week, reach out to the person who's been on your mind. A simple text, call, or note might be the encouragement they need today.
