Jenna & Joe — Chase on the Lake, and a day I keep coming back to.

After the noise of the reception, Jenna stepped out to the dock with her father — a silhouette against the last light on the water, the kind of moment that asks for nothing and says everything. What stays with me isn't any single frame — it's how the two of them were with each other all day, from the quiet morning through the last dance. Chase on the Lake kept handing us light to catch it in; they did the rest.

You're going to interview two to four photographers before you book one. Here are the questions I'd ask, in the order I'd ask them — even if you don't end up hiring me.

→ "Can I see a full gallery?" Not just website highlights. A full 700-image gallery from one wedding. It's the only way to see how someone shoots the boring middle, where the gallery is really made.

→ "What's your editing style in low light?" Most photographers look great at golden hour. The real question is what the reception looks like at 11 p.m. Ask for three reception images from three different weddings.

→ "Have you shot at my venue?" Or venues like it. Venue familiarity on the day is worth more than any gear list.

→ "What if you're sick on my wedding day?" Every established photographer should have an answer. A backup network, a contract clause, named associates. If they don't have one, they've never thought about it.

→ "When exactly will I get my photos?" In weeks, not "a few." Sneak peek, preview, full gallery, album — each with a number. Vague answers now become vague delivery later.

Halfway back down the walk Joe's fist went up. Katie just kept laughing and kept walking. Every couple asks when they'll get their photos. Here's the answer, in writing, with real numbers.

→ First peek: within 72 hours. 10–15 images, color-corrected, on Instagram and in your inbox. Enough to tag vendors. Not enough to spoil the full gallery for your guests.

→ Preview gallery: two to three weeks. 50–75 of the strongest images, fully edited, delivered as a private online gallery. What you share with family before the full delivery.

→ Full gallery: six to eight weeks. Every keeper — 600 to 900 images depending on coverage. Color-corrected, straightened, high-resolution, print-ready. The whole wedding.

→ Album design: three to four months after the wedding. I send a 30-image starter; you swap what you want; I finalize. Printing adds 3–4 weeks. Start-to-finish: about five months.

→ Fall weddings can stretch. September and October are the busiest stretch of my year. Sneak peek and preview hit on time; full gallery runs closer to eight weeks than six. I'll tell you up front, not after.

Of the whole night, this is the frame I kept. Amy and Carter's first dance at Whitefish Lodge turned into the two of them throwing their arms wide with the whole room ringed around the floor — and the room gave it right back.

The photos aren't done when the gallery is delivered. They're done when they're on a wall.

Four things I wish every couple did after the wedding →

→ Bigger than you think. The print that looks huge on your phone looks small over the couch. 24×36 is a starting point for a living room, not a ceiling.

→ Matte for the wall. Glossy for albums. Matte prints don't glare under room lights. Glossy reproduces color better in a bound album. Buy both on purpose.

→ Three prints, not thirty. A gallery wall of thirty small photos is a scrapbook. Three big prints in three rooms is how you live with the photos.

→ Order one by your first anniversary. The first print is the hardest to order. Set a deadline: by year one, at least one on a wall.
