Did You Know…
Sandhill Crane chicks, known as “colts,” develop quickly once hatched, around April-May in Florida. Within 24 hours, these adorable youngsters are capable of leaving the nest and are known for their running abilities from the get-go.

Enjoy these photos taken at the Celery Fields in Sarasota, FL with a very long lens as to not to disturb these chicks in motion.

Check out Guardians of Nature A great page with informative graphics including this one on Peregrine falcons…a native Florida bird you can see in the Sunshine State!

I'm nesting on the ledge of an office building fourteen stories up. The tenants on that floor watch me through the conference room window. I've been here six years.

I'm a peregrine falcon.

In a hunting dive I fold my wings and drop at over two hundred miles per hour. I hit pigeons in mid-air at a speed that would kill anything else on impact. My nostrils are built to let me breathe at terminal velocity. My eyes seal behind a clear membrane on the way down.

I nearly disappeared. A pesticide thinned our eggshells until they cracked under our own weight. By the mid-twentieth century, almost none of us were left east of the Mississippi.

We came back on skyscrapers. Biologists placed chicks on building ledges so they'd grow up seeing cities as home. It worked.

The ledge replaces a cliff. The pigeons replace shorebirds. The thermals between buildings replace canyon updrafts. The city works.

🐦 How to find one near you:

- Look up at tall buildings with ledges near bridges or waterfronts — we need height and open airspace
- Watch for a pointed-wing silhouette diving steep and accelerating. No other bird moves like that
- Search your city name plus "peregrine falcon cam" — many urban nests have webcams
- Listen for a sharp rapid kak-kak-kak echoing off buildings

Over two hundred miles per hour. Fourteen stories up. Right downtown 🌿

One striking Little Blue Heron!
A favorite photo taken of this vibrant wading bird who is a year-round resident in Florida. Nesting season ramps up in March so this bird may still be seen with deep maroon breeding plumage around the head and neck.

Rescue Wednesday: Volunteer Transports
Check out this Red-shouldered hawk who received much needed PT thanks to a network of caring drivers. 🦅 Support The Raptor Center of Tampa Bay and their endless efforts to help birds in need.

Happy Monday!
Did you know the toes of the Purple Gallinule are long and lengthy to help this beautiful Florida marsh bird navigate watery habitats. The adaptation helps the Gallinule climb vegetation and walk on lily pads without sinking. Have a great start to your week with birds!

Rescue Wednesday: See how the good folks at CROW help rehabilitate this American kestral in Sanibel, FL. 💗

The American kestrels have migrated back to Florida for the winter – and we have admitted our first kestrel of 2026! This male (patient 26-194) was discovered lying in the middle of the street, likely struck by a car.

Although he showed no obvious fractures or wounds, the kestrel was unable to stand and appeared very weak. Thanks to ongoing supportive care, he is gradually recovering. He is now eating, perching independently, and making short flights!

Keep animals in mind while you are driving. Think about it this way: roads cut through wetlands, forests, grasslands, and other habitats that are home to thousands of native animal species. There is increasing evidence that animals are adapting to use roads, since a majority of their habitats have been destroyed by overdevelopment.

Think of all the animals you may have spotted while driving your everyday routes – there are turtles in the culverts, coyotes along the sidewalks, birds perched high on telephone lines, and deer in the fields. Staying alert and driving at an appropriate speed could save their lives – and yours.
