I am excited to share that my new photography collection, What’s Not Said… a Study in Negative Space, will be included at a gallery reception in Chatham on Cape Cod.

Over the past year, I have been part of an inspiring group of photographers participating in EXPRESSIONS Community, a unique program offered by EXPRESSIONS Gallery where we focused on a chosen goal. Mine was the role of negative space in photography. I invite you to join us at the gallery, located at 587 Main St in Chatham, on October 4 from 4:30-6:30 in celebration of our respective creative journeys, and to view our imagery on display in the gallery for this special event.

275/365 The Wisdom of Michael of Lahaina

I met Michael during a late winter trip to Hawaii. During the better part of the afternoon we explored his world of custom sandal-making. He was clearly an artisan who loved his craft. In his tiny store on Front Street, he shared decades of history and wisdom, in story after story of life on the island Toward the end of our time together, I asked if I could photograph him. It was an opportunity to capture the essence of Michael though my lens and the soul of Michael through his eyes. Come summer, we exchanged emails when he asked for a copy of his portrait. A few short weeks later, Michael, the 80-year old “sandal maker of Maui”, died - the 93rd victim of Maui’s horrible fires of 2023.

273/365 In the heart of the old city stands an urban narrative of Bratislava … a canvas of time’s relentless artistry. The façade of this building is a mosaic of faded paint, decay and resilience. Each patch of plaster, each exposed brick, and each wooden frame speaks of history’s layers, peeling back to reveal the bones of a past life.

The windows, with peeling paint and tattered curtains, overlook the streets where the whispers of yesteryear’s hustle intermingle with today’s silent footfalls. The texture of the walls, a patchwork quilt of neglect, hints at the countless sunsets and storms it has weathered. It’s a relic of a time when these windows might have
gleamed with pride, now standing as silent guards to the inevitable march of time.

In its halcyon days, this building was abuzz with the chatter of its inhabitants, the clinking of dishes, the laughter of children echoing through the halls. Now, it’s a quiet monument to memories, a stoic structure waiting for new life or the gentle embrace of nature to reclaim it fully.**

272/365 On the banks of the Monongahela, where the water meets the sky, the world is wrapped in a hush of snowy quiet. Mother Nature has draped every tree, every branch in the whitest velvet. The river slowly flowing by is but a winter canvas on which this tapestry is painted. Before us is a monochromatic dreamscape, its texture tangible. Trees, once flush with color, now stand as monochrome guardians at winter’s gate. Limbs are burdened with the weight of snow, as flurries quietly fall, with each layer recrafting Mother Nature’s artistry. The noise of the world is muted. Time stands still.

You lose yourself in the ocean’s movement, in a visual symphony composed with strokes of time and tide. Just as the camera’s eye lingers open, perhaps dreaming a little, you move to the waves’ ceaseless ballet. This tapestry of serene motion, brush strokes on nature’s canvas, is but your memento of the sea’s eternal yet ever-changing dance.

Dawn is greeted by the symphony of livestock and the crisp morning air is filled with the scent of dew-covered grass. Nestled in the rolling hills, a classic red barn stands out—a splash of color in a sea of green - and the center of farm life. This is a working farm where life moves with the land’s rhythm, as timeless as the Appalachian heritage itself. It’s a place where each season is felt deeply and worked completely, and the simple life is not just lived but cherished. This farm, with its open skies and fertile land, is a slice of American tranquility tucked away in the heart of West Virginia.
