Spring in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem was spectacular this year. I saw more wildlife of varied species, than I’ve ever seen in any previous year. I was particularly delighted by these two bull elk. In previous years, a trio of young bull elk had hung out in a particular area on the Northern Range of Yellowstone at various times of the year. Then I didn’t see them for four or five years, during any season. This year I rounded a corner and . . . . there were two!. Still growing their antlers, which were delightfully covered in velvet.

More bird photography in Yellowstone. This is a Sandhill Crane pair that had staked out a spot of land on the western side of the park. I understand their egg hatched shortly after these photos were taken. Photos are of the same pair, just at two different times of day. The changing light shows their colors and plumage well.

A little bird photography in Yellowstone. Harlequin Ducks are shore birds who fly inland to breed before returning to the coast. They prefer fast-moving water, so LeHardy Rapids in Yellowstone National Park is the perfect breeding ground for them.

Feisty bison calves annoy their moms in Grand Teton National Park.

Spent three days visiting some old friends in Grand Teton National Park. The mountains had a smattering of snow and the landscape was lush and green. Facebook cuts off the bottom of each photo, so it is best to click on each one to view it fully.

As I watched a group of mountain goats in the distance in front of me, all of a sudden I realized that the rest of the band was approaching from behind. I found myself surrounded by nannies and kids! How delightful! (The nannies do need a good brushing . . . .)

A pronghorn’s features are so delicate. Watching them requires stealth, as pronghorn startle at human presence and take off. Pronghorn are the fastest land animal in North America, running at speeds up to 60 mph. I took this shot from inside my car, so as not to startle her.

Handsome male pronghorn off the side of the road. He lost his horn sheaths around November and has done a good job of growing them back, though they still have some growth to go.
