Here in the Badlands, we’ve had some cloudy/rainy nights for workshop group #2 and have pivoted to daytime shots. Tonight does look promising for night sky again though!

This was from last night, as the last bit of sunlight peaked through the clouds to give us some great light.

Photographed with my OM System OM-1 MarkII camera with the M.Zuiko 50-200mm f2.8 pro lens.

Last night was night 3 of photo workshop 1 of 2 here in the Badlands. We had clear skies for a few hours and great views & shots of the Milky Way, but this photo stood out in particular.

A storm that went near us that might have produced a tornado and had hail up to 3" made for some great shots. In this photo the storm was about 35 miles away.

Using my OM System OM-3 ASTRO camera and the M.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 lens I photographed star trails above the lightning using Live Comp. There was some smoke and dust in the air which helped with the warm coloring.

Here's a shot from last night - night 2 of my Badlands Milky Way photo workshop.

Photographed with my OM System OM-5 MkII camera and the M.Zuiko 25mm f1.2 lens. The foreground was photographed during blue hour. The sky is 2 photos stitched together, shot using the Move Shoot Move Nomad star tracker.

I kind of like how the light from a car or something funnels up from the horizon into the Milky Way through the haze and smoke on the horizon.

What an opening night for my photo workshop clients on sold-out workshop 1 of 2 here in Badlands National Park, SD!

In the first photo we were able to photograph a lightning storm 40 miles away that happened to be under the Milky Way as the sky was becoming pure dark.

We also had the lucky fortune of having some light from some cars illuminate the landscape for us. One car happened to be driving behind the landscape providing light rays above, while another car illuminated the front of it.

The other photo is a 1hr Live Composite star trail photo.

Both photos from my OM System OM-3 ASTRO camera and the M.Zuiko 12mm f2.0 lens.

This is last call for my upcoming Mastering Black & White Photography in Badlands National Park, South Dakota photo workshop next month!

I have to release the remaining hotel rooms I have reserved this coming Wednesday.

The dates of the workshop are September 14 - 18, 2026 and hotel with your own private room is included in the price of the workshop.

The Badlands are a perfect location to explore black & white photography. We will be studying texture, form, composition, contrast, and so much more while photographing the landscape, wildlife, and ghost towns. Becoming better at b&w photography can improve your color photography too, and we will talk about that as well.

Check out all the details on this workshop in the comments, and be sure to register before this Wednesday so your room can be locked in.
