A snoot is one of the most powerful tools for controlling light underwater. By narrowing the broad beam of a strobe into a focused spot, you can direct attention exactly where you want it, highlighting textures, colors, and details that might otherwise get lost in a busy scene. While snoots are famous for creating dramatic black backgrounds, they can also be used to selectively light subjects, reveal texture, and create unique lighting effects that simply aren't possible with conventional strobe lighting. Like any advanced technique, snooting takes patience and practice, but once you master it, it opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities.

Backlighting with a snoot is a great way to create images that stand out. By placing the snooted light behind your subject, you can highlight translucent features, emphasize textures, and create a dramatic glow around the edges. Adding a subtle fill light from the front helps reveal important details while maintaining the striking backlit effect. It takes a bit of practice to position the light just right, but the results can transform an ordinary subject into something extraordinary.

Close focus wide angle is all about telling a bigger story. By getting close to a subject like this seahorse while including a diver in the background, you can showcase both the intricate details of the animal and the environment it calls home. This technique creates a sense of scale that would be impossible to achieve with a traditional macro lens alone. When done well, close focus wide angle images connect the viewer to both the subject and the experience of being underwater.

Before moving on from a subject, take the time to explore different angles and compositions. A slight change in perspective can completely transform the feel of an image, whether it’s shooting lower, filling the frame differently, or adjusting your background. By experimenting before swimming away, you give yourself more creative options and increase the chances of capturing something truly unique.

Sometimes the best shot is the one you almost didn’t take.

Combining a slow shutter speed with a snoot can create a unique blend of motion blur and sharpness in a single image. Start by using a slower shutter speed to capture movement in the surrounding environment or background, then use a snoot to precisely light your subject in this case, a Napolean snake eel. The concentrated burst of strobe light freezes the eel while the longer exposure records ambient motion around it, creating an image that feels both dynamic and intentional. It’s a creative technique that takes practice, but the results can be well worth the effort.

Cropping can be a powerful creative tool, especially when working with tiny subjects like a pygmy seahorse. A thoughtful crop can help eliminate distractions, strengthen composition, and draw the viewer directly to the details that matter most. Don’t be afraid to refine your framing during post processing if it helps better communicate the image you envisioned. Sometimes a strong crop is what transforms a good image into a great one.

If you want strong, defined sun rays in your images, staying shallow in the water column is key. The closer you are to the surface, the less water there is to scatter and soften the light, helping the rays appear sharper and more dramatic. Calm conditions and a low sun angle in the early morning or late afternoon can make the effect even stronger. Combine that with the right camera settings, and you’ll be well on your way to capturing beautiful natural light beams underwater.
