Before the holiday rush begins, spend a little time 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿.

In the vacation folder?
The family folder?
Under Grandma?
Yellowstone?
2026?

The problem is…𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

That’s one reason organizing digital photos with folders alone can get frustrating. Our memories are connected to people, places, events, dates, and stories—and they don’t always fit neatly into one box.

In this week’s Memory-Keeping Memo, I’m sharing a different way to think about photo organization: instead of asking “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼?”undefined, ask:

“𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻?”

That little shift can make a BIG difference.

🌳 Your family tree tells you who they were. But does it tell you how they lived?

When we're researching family history, it's easy to concentrate on finding the next name, date, or record.

Birth. Marriage. Death. Census.

Those records are important—but they're really only the framework of a person's life.

The interesting part is filling in the spaces between.

Where did they live?
What did they do for work?
What did their neighborhood look like?
What did they eat?
How did they spend an ordinary day?
What was happening in their community while they lived there?

Even a census can become more interesting when you stop looking at it only for names and dates. Look at occupations. Neighbors. Who was living in the household. Whether they owned or rented their home. Where family members were born.

Then look beyond the census. Old newspapers, city directories, maps, school records, military records, photographs, and family stories can all add pieces to the picture.

Genealogy isn't only about discovering our ancestors. It's about discovering their lives.

Maybe it's your daughter when she was five. Grandma with the grandchildren. A favorite vacation. Christmas morning from years ago.

How long would it take you to find it?

We talk a lot about the 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 of organizing photos. But this week I'm looking at the other side:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱?

Imagine finding the people and moments you want, sharing a picture when someone asks, or starting a photo book or gift without spending half your time hunting for pictures.

That's why I organize my photos. It isn't about having a perfectly tidy collection. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆.

🌳 Sunday is Ancestor Appreciation Day.

What a good excuse to spend a little time thinking about the people who came before us.

We often know our ancestors through names on a family tree, dates in a database, or old photographs tucked away in a box. But each of those names represents a real person who had relationships, challenges, routines, hopes, personalities—and stories.

Our ancestors don't have to be famous or extraordinary to be worth remembering. Their ordinary lives helped shape the families we have today.

📼 Have a stack of old tapes or film you've been meaning to do something with?

This might be a good week to pull them out.

🎁 Last week I suggested starting to gather photos for holiday gifts. So…what do you do with them now?

Before you start designing anything, think about who the gift is for.

Then look through the pictures you've gathered and ask: What would mean the most to this person?

For Grandma, it might be photos of all the grandchildren from throughout the year.

For your adult child, maybe it's pictures of the family traditions they grew up with.

For a spouse, it could be favorite moments from trips and everyday adventures you've shared.

For a friend, maybe it's the pictures that make both of you laugh every time you see them.

Once you know the person and the story, deciding what to create becomes much easier—a photo book, calendar, canvas, ornament, blanket, or something else entirely.

And you don't have to make it yet.

This week's step is simply to decide who is on your photo-gift list and what collection of pictures would be meaningful to each person.

Getting those decisions made now means that when you're ready to create, you won't be starting from scratch in November. 😊

📷 This picture was probably taken because of the cat.

She used to sleep on top of our television—probably because it was warm.

But nearly 50 years later, I find myself looking at the TV almost as much as the cat.

The size. The cabinet. The k***s. All the little details that were so completely ordinary in the 1970s that no one would have thought they were worth documenting.

And yet, here I am decades later, fascinated by them.

It makes me wonder: What are we surrounded by today that our children and grandchildren will wish they could see someday?

Our kitchens.
Our cars.
The technology we use.
What's sitting on the bathroom counter.
The toys on the floor.
The groceries in our cart.
Even our washer and dryer.

We tend to photograph the big moments. But most of our lives happen in between them.

This week's Memory-Keeping Memo is about those pictures—the ones that preserve not only the people we love, but what everyday life actually looked like.

And I included another childhood photo that tells an even bigger story about what everyday life looked like for my family while my dad was building our house.
