šŸ“¼ What’s hiding on your old tapes?

First steps. Birthday parties. Christmas mornings. School programs. Family vacations. People you love—and voices you may not have heard in years.

Those old VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, MiniDV and other video tapes aren't just taking up space in a box.

They may be holding memories you can't find anywhere else. ā¤ļø

September is a great time to finally get them preserved.

Right now, FOREVER Digitization Boxes are 50% off through September 9. Or, if video is what you need to preserve, the Tape & Film Box lets you digitize tapes and film for $12.50 per tape or 50 feet of film.

Not sure which option makes the most sense for what you have?

šŸ“© Send me a picture of your tapes or tell me what you've got. I'll help you figure it out.

What would you most love to see again from an old home movie?

šŸ“– What’s the photo book you keep meaning to make?

You know the one. 😊

Maybe it’s last year’s family photos.

šŸ–ļø A favorite vacation
šŸŽ“ A graduation or milestone
šŸ‘¶ Your child or grandchild’s year
🌳 A family history or heritage book
ā¤ļø A book celebrating someone you love

What if I told you it doesn’t have to take forever to make it?

With FOREVER AutoBook, you choose your photos and let AutoBook do the initial work of laying them out into a book for you. From there, you can make it your own—or keep it simple and get that book DONE!

I can show you how to make a photo book FAST. šŸ™Œ

And right now is a great time to try it: FOREVER Photo Books are 50% off September 1–9 during the Labor Day Sale.

Use code SEASON26.

šŸŽ Have you ever had the PERFECT gift idea…and then completely forgotten it?

Maybe you saw something in a store months ago. Someone mentioned something they’d love. Or you thought, That would be perfect for Christmas!

Then the gift-giving occasion arrives and…what was that idea again? šŸ¤”

This week’s Memory-Keeping Memo has a surprisingly simple way to use something you may already have—your photo organization system—to keep track of gift ideas all year long.

You can use it to:
šŸ“ø Save photos and screenshots of gift ideas
šŸ“ Keep track of sizes, favorites, and things people like
šŸŽ Remember what you’ve given in previous years
ā¤ļø Collect meaningful photos for future photo gifts
šŸ“š Start gathering photos for books, calendars, blankets, and other projects long before you’re ready to create them

I even share a photo blanket I made for my dad and how this same idea can make planning personalized gifts so much easier.

And no, I’m not telling you that you need to start making your Christmas presents in August! šŸ˜„

This is about making things easier for your future self.

Finding a name and date isn't the end of genealogy research. Sometimes it's where the interesting part begins. šŸ”Ž

When you find an ancestor in a record, take a minute before moving on to the next generation.

Ask yourself:

What else does this record tell me about their life?

An address can lead you to the house or neighborhood where they lived.

An occupation can lead to information about the company, mine, railroad, farm, school, or industry where they worked.

A school name might lead to yearbooks, newspapers, or school records.

A military unit can lead to histories that tell you where your ancestor went and what they experienced.

Even the names of witnesses, neighbors, boarders, or other people on the page can provide clues.

Genealogy gets especially interesting when we stop collecting names and dates and start asking:

What was this person's life actually like?

The record may give you the facts.

The clues inside it can help you find the story. šŸ’š

Should you organize your old photos before you digitize them—or digitize first and organize later?

My answer: a little of both. šŸ“·

Before you send photos, slides, negatives, tapes, or other memories to be digitized, do a quick first pass.

Pull out:
• obvious duplicates
• blurry or unusable photos
• things you know you don't want
• anything that doesn't actually belong with the collection

But don't feel like you need to identify every person, determine every date, or put 40 years of family photos into perfect chronological order first.

That can turn ā€œI want to save theseā€ into a project that never gets finished.

Once your memories are digital, you can often do the deeper organizing much more easily. You can sort by dates, create albums, identify people, add descriptions and stories, and reorganize things without physically moving piles and boxes around.

That's one reason I like having digitized memories in FOREVER StorageĀ®. I can preserve them first and continue adding organization and information over time.

Do a quick sort. Get them preserved. Then improve the organization as you go.

Progress beats waiting for perfect. šŸ’š

We talk a lot about saving our photos.

Backing them up. Organizing them. Protecting them. Making sure they aren't lost.

All of that matters. But there's another part of memory keeping that I think is just as important:

Actually enjoying them. šŸ’š

Your favorite photos don't have to live forever on a screen.

Choose one and put it on your wall. Make a little book of a favorite trip. Create a calendar that makes you smile all year. Turn a family memory into a Christmas gift for someone who was part of it.

And here's a tip: don't wait until you have everything organized.

You don't need to finish your entire photo collection before you make something from it. Pick one memory, one event, one person, or one little collection of photos you love—and do something with them.

Save the memories, yes.

But then use them. Share them. Enjoy them. That's why we're keeping them in the first place. ā¤ļø

P.S. If FOREVER StorageĀ® is on your list right now, there's a nice bonus this month: qualifying one-time Storage purchases of 50 GB or more include a future-use print coupon, good through October 31. So you can protect your memories now—and then turn some of them into something you can enjoy later.

Your photos do not have to be organized before you protect them. šŸ“ø

I think this is one of the biggest things that keeps people stuck.

We tell ourselves:

I need to delete the extras first.
I need to sort everything into folders.
I need to figure out what all these photos are.
Then I'll get them backed up.

Meanwhile, the only copy may still be sitting on a phone, computer, old hard drive, or somewhere else that could fail.

Protection and organization are two different jobs.

If your photos aren't safely stored yet, I'd rather see you get them somewhere secure—even messy—and organize them a little at a time afterward.

That's one of the things I appreciate about FOREVER StorageĀ®. I don't have to have everything figured out before I upload. I can protect the memories first and then use Albums, People, Tags, dates, and other tools to organize them as I have time.

So if you've been putting off protecting your photos because they're a mess, here's your permission to change the order:

Save first. Organize second. Enjoy along the way. šŸ’š

Do you really need more photo storage… or do you just need a little less clutter? šŸ¤”

It’s amazing how quickly the extras pile up—screenshots we no longer need, blurry shots, accidental photos, and six versions of the same moment because we were trying to get one good one.

And then one day we look at thousands of photos and think, Where do I even start?

My newest Memory-Keeping Memo shares a few ideas for ways to declutter your photos.

šŸ“– Read: Do You Really Need More Storage—or Just Less Clutter?

And FOREVER users—stay tuned! This Thursday on FOREVER Foto Focus, I’ll take this idea one step further and show you ways to free up space inside your FOREVER account.

ā¤ļø Happy National Senior Citizens Day!

Today is a good day to celebrate the older people in our lives—not just for everything they've done, but for everything they know.

They remember people we never met.
Places that have changed or disappeared.
Family traditions and the reasons behind them.
What our parents were like as children.
Stories that may exist nowhere else except in their memories.

Here's a simple way to celebrate today:

Ask a question.

Ask about their first job.
Their childhood home.
How they met their spouse.
A favorite family tradition.
The neighborhood where they grew up.
The story behind an old photograph.

And then—this is the important part—record the answer.

Write it down. Make an audio recording. Take a video. Add the story to a photo. It doesn't have to be formal or complicated.

Someday, you may be very grateful you asked.

I'm especially excited to spend National Senior Citizens Day at Celebration of the Ages today at Tracy Aviary in Salt Lake City, helping people think about ways to preserve their photos, home movies and family stories.

If you're there, come find me and say hello!

And whether you're joining us or not, I hope you'll celebrate today by asking someone you love a question—and listening to the story. ā¤ļø
