If you want galleries that feel full, intentional, and storytelling, these are the simple shots I make sure to capture at every session.
1️⃣ Kids in focus, parents softly blurred
Let the kids be the hero of the frame while parents exist in the background. It creates depth and shows connection without making it feel overly posed.
2️⃣ Extreme wides for art
Step way back. Use the environment to tell the story. These frames make beautiful artwork in the house that is timeless
3️⃣ One subject in focus
You don’t need to take individual shots of each person if want to make art, not just take photos. You can simply focus on a single person with the other subject not in focus!
4️⃣ Distance between subjects
This is my favorite prompt for families. Let them stand in different playing fields of vision and each doing different things.
5️⃣ Intentional interaction prompts
Give them something to do — whisper a secret, throw them up in the air, give them kisses.
6️⃣ Mommy cuddles
Always carve out a moment for mom with the kids. Soft hugs, forehead kisses, holding them close — these end up being the images moms treasure most.
7️⃣ Roaming shots
Encourage families to move. Walk, explore, chase the kids. Movement prevents stiff posing and creates candid storytelling moments.
8️⃣ Parents at eye level with kids
Have parents kneel or sit so they connect face-to-face with their children. This immediately makes images feel more intimate and natural.
