I was pouting in bed sure that I had missed seeing the aurora tonight, when just after midnight I saw the pinkish glow in the sky. Grabbed my camera and tripod and ran out into the back yard for an amazing show.

Itʻs been a minute since I've done some backyard astrophotography. I forgot how much I missed it! Tonightʻs subjects: The Double Cluster in Perseus and Bodeʻs Nebula (Top left and itʻs actually a galaxy - sorry Bode) and the Cigar Galaxy (Bottom left) in Ursa Major. Plus a third bonus galaxy showed up! I donʻt know this one and will look it when Iʻm not dead tired.

If you’re thinking about heading to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes this July 4th weekend, be aware that visitation is very high and parking at popular areas like Nāhuku lava tube or Devastation could be full, especially if you come during peak hours, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Make your first stop the park website for Kīlauea eruption updates and safety information. Be flexible and have a plan B.
