This tiny explorer is part of something much bigger. Prairie dogs are one of Colorado’s keystone species, and their colonies support more than 150 other species of wildlife. Their incredible underground world of tunnels and burrows provides homes for creatures ranging from burrowing owls to snakes and toads. Prairie dogs are also an important prey species for everything from golden eagles to endangered black-footed ferrets. Never overlook these little guys. Common as they are around here, they help support an entire ecosystem, and I think they’re just wonderful.
