Happy Halloween! Have you gotten your calendars yet?

I hope all of my are having a great Halloween weekend so far. With the holidays coming up, now is a good time to pick up a 2027 Colorado Wall Calendar. This is my fifth year making it, with 25 new photographs from across the state, two for every month, from the top of the Great Sand Dunes to winter in the Indian Peaks. They make a great gift for anyone who loves Colorado.

Fall color in the Flat Tops

A few photos from a September trip to the Flat Tops – a very underrated area to experience fall in Colorado. Every year people head for the same popular destinations in hordes (Kebler Pass, the Maroon Bells, the San Juans) while the Flat Tops sit a few hours north with just as much aspen and a fraction of the traffic.

Most of the groves here are easily accessed via long gravel roads between Yampa and Meeker, but the distance from major towns keeps them quiet. On this trip low clouds hung along the rim of the plateau as the aspens began their slow turn from green to gold. Rain had fallen through the night, and by morning every leaf in the groves was beaded with water, the grasses soaked and bent over, and the dark timber still dripping long after the storm had passed.

Autumn rainbow in the Flat Tops
White River National Forest, Colorado

I just finished curating my collection of new fall color images from across the high country. On this evening I was driving along a country road in the Flat Tops when this rainbow appeared in my rear view mirror.

I pulled over and knew I had to quickly find a composition before the light faded. I spotted this brilliant stand of aspen just below the road and sprinted over to set up my camera. I'm always thrilled when a scene comes together spontaneously like this and I get to go home with a unique photo.

I woke up this morning to rain slapping the top of my truck. I questioned whether the storm would break in time for sunrise and if it would be worth it to hike through the rain. Luckily, the rain stopped after about 30 minutes and I was able to start my hike without getting soaked. When I reached the meadow and set up my camera, the eastern horizon was nothing but gray. The only sign of the rising sun was a small glow in the distance.

Minutes later, the light somehow broke through and lit the massive cliff face lining the valley in gold. I watched in awe as it slowly spilled down into the aspens below. I've had this shot in my mind for years, and this morning it finally came to fruition.
