Fought July 11-12, 1864, the Battle of Fort Stevens was the only Civil War battle fought in Washington DC. It was also the only time a sitting American president came under enemy fire. 1864 was an election year and both sides were well aware of all that was at stake!

Is excited that we have a newly designated national park in our park system! I had a wonderful visit to Chiricahua back in 2022. It’s a beautiful place! Here are some of my photos from that visit:

It was such a gorgeous afternoon when I got out to see the in last year. It’s a real, old that’s been stabilized and staged to some degree for tourism and photography, but it’s still a fabulous piece to see.

In 1910, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in was the largest textile mill in the world. It employed 17,000 workers and was turning out everything from army uniforms to Levi’s jeans. For a century it was a huge success, and then greed took over. They chose to line their pockets instead of investing in modern equipment and technology. Then they asked their employees to work longer hours for lower wages and a century of good will went down the drain. They declared bankruptcy in 1935 and the following spring floods destroyed much of their equipment. For a long time it was a classic example of a company town and a northern mill town. Now the whole town has been reimagined into something different, but many of the old buildings are still there!

Dr. Josiah Bartlett was the first person to vote for and the second person to sign our . He was an important and well regarded member of his local community and went on to become governor of New Hampshire (and yes, I know I mistakenly said Massachusetts in the video, it was crazy windy and surprisingly busy out there in , please forgive the mistake). I enjoyed learning more about him over the last few days.

It’s always a treat to visit the in . This was the first time that I’ve been able to tour the house which was really interesting. Mostly I just enjoy walking through the woods around the farm.

For ten years, lived with his family on a farm in . It was really during that time of his life that he found the solitude and inspiration to become the poet he was destined to be. Frost’s poetry captured life in rural so well that even people who don’t like poetry find themselves enjoying his writing. And just in case you didn’t know this, the name of this page and of my website is a tribute to him. It’s on his farm here in that I feel closest to him.

Had a great day out in the other day. Coastal views, fishing boats and lobster rolls were all on the menu and it was a beautiful day for it!
