KEVIN G. ALDER
who was a private first class in the U.S. Marine Corps, received
It took 55 years, but Haverhill Vietnam veteran Kevin Alder,
his Purple Heart. Kevin’s medal was pinned on him by his wife,
Paulette, on August 8, 2023.
Alder, one of fourteen children, enlisted in the Marine Corps at
age 17 and after boot camp on Parris Island, he was deployed to
Quang Tri Province in Vietnam. Out on patrol one day, a Marine
stepped on a b***y trap, killing three Marines and wounding twenty,
including Kevin.
“We were in the jungle, so they had to come in there with tanks to
carry us out to helicopters, where a helicopter could land. Then I was
medevaced out of there, ending up in Okinawa at the Army hospital.”
He was eventually discharged, and when arriving home, he became
aware of not having received his Purple Heart Medal.
This oversight came to the attention of Haverhill Veterans Service
Director Jeffrey C. Hollett and 411 Cares volunteer Alex Veras, who
made the connection leading up to Kevin’s pinning ceremony. Hollett
had reached out to the state Executive Office of Veterans’ Services,
which was able to confirm his eligibility.
Kevin, who retired after working 30 years for Haverhill Public
Schools said, “I was full of emotion when the Purple Heart was
pinned on me by Paulette, to me it was closure.”
