| Artist Spotlight | Andrea Castro Andrea

Born and raised in the Boston area but now residing just outside of the city, Andrea has been taking photos for the last 10 years. She began her journey by purchasing her first film camera with her very first paycheck from her first job at 15.

“I have always been drawn to documentary photography, although I’ve never felt that my work fits neatly into one category. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been attentive to the smallest details of the world around me. The way a person’s eyes wander or their hands interact with their surroundings, the nuances of their expressions and mannerisms, the quality of light that enters a room, the sounds and textures of a place, and the subtle energy between people. I’m fascinated by how these seemingly insignificant details can reveal something about a person, a place, or an experience that might otherwise go unnoticed. Ultimately, I’m inspired by the possibility of reflecting humanity back to itself, of honoring the world by paying attention to it, and by giving form to experiences that might otherwise exist only as fragments of memory and feeling.”

All of Andrea’s photos were taken with her Leica M4, a 35mm Summicron 8-element lens, and Kodak Tri-X 400 film. Be sure to follow Andrea on her photography journey!

| Artist Spotlight | Jean-Marie Detcher. Jean-Marie Detcher

Jean Marie has been taking photographs for roughly 30 years and found her start in portraits and landscapes. Recently, from travel and exploring different cultures, she has found a love of street and documentary photography.

“I’m inspired by the everyday emotions, nascent or otherwise, that people exhibit as they move through their day. I’m also intrigued by somewhat comical or ironic scenes that really create a pause (or a laugh!). I make black and white images because to me, it feels more timeless. I’ve also dabbled in documentary photography and aspire to do more. A dream destination for street photography would be various cities in India capturing their cultural rituals.”

All of Jean-Marie’s Photos were taken with her M10 Monochrom or with her M4 and Leica Monopan 50 film (photo #6).

No Viewfinder, no problem!

Yes, your seeing that correctly. Welcome to the Leica MDa. Built upon the legendary M4 platform, just without the view and rangefinder. This system is extra light and ultra durable due to closed off design. Many even say its is the most durable M body to date.

This camera was made to be paired with a visoflex viewfinder that sits on the hot-shoe mount on the top of the camera. But in the late 1960’s, this system was used for microscopy and other scientific or medical applications. But now this “Blind Leica” would make a great addition to any photographer’s bag and when paired with a 24mm lens with a viewfinder!

Laura Crowe is a photographer who has been living in Boston for the last 10 years and was an early friend of the store and our community when she moved to the city.

She uses both film and digital systems to capture her images and favors crisp black-and-white shots.

“My dream destination photoshoot would be in Southern Italy, where my grandmother is from, to photograph daily life.”

Enjoy a fun afternoon photo walk at Topsfield Fair!

Join us for a photo-walk on October 3rd at the Topsfield Fair!
We will be meeting at the fairgrounds around 4PM. The “Meeting Spot” is titled #35 on the map linked on Eventbrite.

Bring comfy shoes and an empty belly as there will be much to enjoy!

Please note that transportation is not provided as we will be meeting at the fairground not at the store.

Also keep a look out for a follow up event that we will host here at the Leica Store. We will take submissions of photo’s from that day a put together a group viewing session!

About Event:
A photo walk, hosted by your local Foto community host. We meet, we walk, we make photos together, no likes or followers involved. What to expect This year’s Boston walk is led by photographer Michael Luzzio, in collaboration with the Leica Store and Gallery Boston. We start and end at the store, and you’ll spend a couple hours walking through the city with other photographers from the Boston and Foto community. Along the way, you’ll make photos, take portraits of each other, and talk to people who notice the same light you do.

This year’s theme is contrast. Light against shadow, old against new, whatever catches your eye and won’t let it go. The walk wraps back at the Leica gallery for an image share. A chance to see what everyone else saw on the same streets, in a space built for looking at photographs. And if any camera questions arise, the Leica Store Boston team will be there to help.

No experience needed. Bring any camera you own, phone included.
