“Against the Light” watercolor on paper- 11x14
After years behind a camera, I know this is the kind of light we’re often taught to avoid—hard, unforgiving, with washed-out highlights and deep shadows.
But that’s exactly what draws my eye.
The glare across her face, the raised hand, and the dark shapes surrounding her all create a moment that softer, “better” light never could. What some might call bad lighting became the entire reason I wanted to paint it.
