“Blooms from the Sky”

It’s rare that I see lenticular clouds appear in the Southeast, so when they do, it’s a treat. The sun had just come up, and the light was turning harsh. On the mountaintops, heavy winds had blown many of the flowers away. But the ones that remained, though sparse, were full of color. Looking out from the peak, the vast range stretched in all directions. Complemented by lenticular clouds above and rhododendrons below, the landscape was a marvel to behold.

Another trip around the sun, another year older 🎂, another year full of memories.

Change in nature is a guaranteed constant. And the duality of nature is often reflected in these changes.

The weather in the mountains is fickle. Predicting them is often futile, and good conditions are elusive. Clear, sunny skies could quickly turn cloudy, accompanied by rain, fog, and wind. Nature is as beautiful as it is harsh.

These two photographs are taken at the same location but with different weather conditions. The mood of the landscape is dependent on the weather, which gives each landscape its unique beauty, transforming the same landscape into seemingly different locations altogether. Which one do you gravitate towards?

“Spring Vitality”

As night turned to day, cliffside rhododendrons were illuminated by the sun's light. Vivid pinkish hues complemented the Layers of lush green mountains, which stretched as far as the eye could see. Complemented by clouds and blue sky, the landscape shone with warm brilliance.

Sweet dreams from Blue Ridge. Happy International Dark Sky week!

Like little diamonds, they fly in the sky
Only visible in lands without gold
These jewels of the night twinkle
Filling the darkness with stories of old

Look on in awe and wonderment
A spectacle of dancing lights
A calming mystique filling the air
Only to be revealed in the darkest of nights

Elusive yet abundant
Hidden in plain sight
It is only when we seek such darkness
That the heavens reveal such light

For without darkness
There can be no light
Balance rules the natural world
And nothing is ever truly black or white

Eat or be eaten
Life and death
It’s balance that keeps everything together
A balance we often neglect

Always working, with little rest
We respond with okay
When asked how we are
Only for time to burn us away

Advancing and adding
Without realizing the loss
For nothing can truly be gained
Without an effect and cause

As we leave behind our past
and the memories we’ve made
We often will find
That a part of us still stays

For something familiar yet unknown
We feel a sense of wistful longing
It is only when we seek again
That we feel a sense of true belonging

“Pink Heaven”

Pink flowers against pink skies make for the perfect landscape. As Spring nears, more of these rhododendrons will bloom in the Appalachians surrounding Tennessee and North Carolina, filling the mountainsides with vibrant colors of pink. Pair these flora with lush green mountains and golden colors at sunset and realize the charm of the Southeast and why these mountains feel like “almost heaven”

“Snaking”

Roads create beautiful shapes as they wind through mountainous terrain. As dusk settles and cars traverse the switchbacks, they form intricate trails, snaking through the mountain passes and illuminating the roads with curves of light.

“Dappled Flow”

As afternoon set in the Colorado highlands, dappled light from the sun washed over the landscape, casting golden light over the rolling plains and aspen groves. Thick clouds drifted up above, complementing the drama of snow-capped peaks. All these elements flowed effortlessly together, creating a landscape that radiated warmth.

“Range”

Oh give me a home. Where the buffalo roam.

Open fields and vast mountain ranges surround much of the Colorado highlands. Being in the presence of these landscapes, marveling at the tall mountains and vast acres of grassland billowing in the breeze invokes both tranquility and magnificence. As horses gallop in the plains and clouds drift in the large expanse of sky, there is a liberating sense of freedom.

Storm Glow

The best sunsets come after a storm. Warm glows coupled with moody clouds create rare conditions of dramatic contrast. After an afternoon of hail in the mountains of Colorado, the clouds opened up just slightly around sunset. A golden glow emanated around the horizon line against a moody backdrop of thick clouds. The mountainside was hit with alpenglow, casting an ethereal impression against a dramatic atmosphere. The result, an elusive show of contrasting light and dark elements only realized after a storm.

“Road to Wonderland”

As night turned to day, fresh snow covered mountainsides and aspens. The contrast of hot and cold coupled with elements of low fog was breathtaking. The roads were empty around sunrise as the fresh chill of morning air permeated the landscape. The scene presented itself like a winter wonderland, reflecting the idea of an ideal Christmas morning.

“Rustic Afternoon”

As the day ended in Colorado high country, the setting sun casts a golden light over layers of peaks and plains. Warmth spread among the landscape as light and shadow danced around. The rustic feeling of being in these mountains reflected a deep sense of Americana.
