Moonlight shines on Iran’s rising mother. The Asia’s highest live volcano Mt Damavand symbolizes Iranian strength, resistance against tyranny, and a national identity in Persian culture. I can’t find beauty in the night sky when my motherland is in pain, where I lived until 2011. I have paused my usual posts and shared stories to be a voice for the voiceless Iranians. I understand your primary connection to my content is peace and inspiration that the night sky provides and I’m sorry if this is disturbing.
What is happening to protesting Iranians is crime against humanity. A population of 90 millions were keep in a total communication cut. Every night, huge crowds are on the streets in all 31 provinces of the country chanting for regime change. The Islamic Republic leader ordered open shooting at unarmed protestors, young and old, family members falling to the ground next to each other, turning the last page of this 47-year nightmare. Iranian opposition media report 12,000-20,000 people are killed in the past few nights, while the scene kept hidden from the world. Survivors who require urgent care are being denied access to state-controlled hospitals or were taken by regime forces. Doctors are warned treating injured protesters is a crime. Families seeking their lost ones are asked by the regime forces to pay 7 Billion Rials (~ $6000) to receive the bodies of protesters it has killed.
This level of violence combined with extreme corruption and economy collapse, explain why Iranians become largely secular, why Iran has the world’s most separated nation from its government, why every few years an uprising happens, and why the nation no longer seek government reform.
For almost half a century Iranians have lost their today and tomorrow, peace and happiness. Art, culture, justice, honesty, and dignity have been constantly suppressed in the name of religion.

The Year in Pictures Part 2.
Slide 2- In March, a assignment to Grand Canyon for Above & Below earth-space photography project. Here in the 6-min timelapse exposure crosses across the sky.
3- A 30-sec exposure by , near the same date, of trailing cities in the Southwest (LA on the left), and the Grand Canyon dark patch (upper-right).
4/5- On the lunar eclipse night in March, was under snow storm. I found clear skies in on Hualapai tribe reservation.
6- In space, the total eclipse was not visible to in the right time, but a partial eclipse appeared above day-lit earth.
7- In April, near the end of Pettit’s mission, an Above & Below assignment took me to Madagascar, to photograph majestic baobab trees under the southern sky. By
8- In space, Pettit captured clear photos of the island in moonlight but this wide-angle view of the southern Milky Way above a thunderstorm in Madagascar stands out.
9- In June, the rising Milky Way South Dakota’s Badlands National Park. is a dark sky designated park by
10- Big Dipper above Mt. Rushmore.
11- Nearby in Wyoming, with Deneb and Vega in the sky.
12- At Devils Tower my wife and our son Aban who loves the national parks.
13- Every August I co-organize Maine Stargazing & Photography Retreat in , both for beginner and advanced astrophotographers.
14- A highlight of the Maine program was having astronaut Don Pettit with us.
15- Zermatt in Switzerland was on my radar for many years for the spectacular view of Mt Matterhorn at night and an opportunity finally came in August.
16- Each September I’m in Iceland for the annual 10-night aurora photo-tour that mainly explores remote sites but also visits some of the popular places like an erupting geyser in the Golden Circle (bottom).
17- In October for I was in Thailand. This is a river-bank firefly sanctuary which is only accessible on boat.
18- In October, Lemmon became the year’s brightest comet, barely visible to unaided eyes but fantastic through a telephoto lens.

The Year in Pictures part 1. A very productive year for my photography and public speaking, along with challenging times.
Slide 1: A comet chasing trip in New England. By
2- A rare Mars occultation behind the moon and a great planetary alignment started the year.
3- In January I started Earth After Dark for National Geographic Live speaking series. The show includes many aspects of my work from astronomy and night sky wonders to dark sky, from nocturnal wildlife to the impact of light pollution and how an individual can help.
4- February was focused on Above & Below in cities. On a project in 2024-25, I coordinated with NASA astronaut Don Pettit to photograph the same place or phenomenon from earth and the ISS, all at night, and when possible synchronous. Coordination required a lot of planning. In this wide-angle 45-minute timelapse image, the earth rotation has formed startrails above the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Low air traffic in late evening and crystal clear sky made this possible despite bright artificial lights.
5- In space, recorded a closeup of the Bay Area with a 200mm f2 lens, from San Jose in the bottom to San Francisco, Oakland, and the Golden Gate at top.
6- Under a “Humanitas” sculpture on Mt. Etna slopes. In March Above & Below took me across 3 continents. It was the most intense time of this marathon project. A volcanic eruption in Sicily added a last-minute stop on the way to Asia, to include Mt Etna. But in a car robbery I lost my gears, Etna photos, and even passport. It will take me years to replace the custom-made pieces and cameras. My Sicilian astro-friends gave me accessories to continue the trip, and the next day at the US consulate in Naples I received an emergency passport and headed to Maldives.
7- A wide-angle image of the entire Italy (with Sicily on the left), from the ISS.
8- In Fari Islands of Maldives, for , morning rise of the Milky Way was spectacular.
9- In space, using a 28mm lens and bright moonlight on the Indian Ocean, Don revealed the islands of Maldives.
10- From Maldives to Grand Canyon in Arizona, on assignment. Photo:

Wishing you peaceful holidays and a wonderful New Year’s Eve. Constellation Gemini, the twins, is a prominent figure in the northern hemisphere winter sky. Here it is rising above the Half Dome, a giant granite dome left from glacier movement in Yosemite National Park, California. A starburst filter is used on the lens for this single-exposure photograph, creating diffraction spikes for brighter stars. The two brightest are Castor and Pollux (slow 2), forming the heads of the twin figures, named for mythical Greek brothers. Pollux is brighter and golden, while Castor is white and is actually a complex system of six stars.
“Gemini and Half Dome” is added to my print store for inquiries (link in bio).

A Moon Eating Monster! It was a crystal clear evening on the summit of Haleakala crater in Maui, Hawaii. At altitude of 10,000ft (3050m) it’s one of the best spots for stargazing in the US National Parks. The crescent moon was setting behind an odd-looking cloud on the horizon. From earlier at dusk (slides 2-3) this towering cumulus cloud was forming all kids of strange shapes and by midnight it grew to a thunderstorm supercell.

A close conjunction of moon and Jupiter above Mt Whitney in California. Note the Galilean Moons of Jupiter are visible in this telephoto single-exposure image. It was on a joint photo workshop with my colleague in 2016. Using a couple of dedicated apps for this purpose we calculated where exactly to be, to see the waxing crescent moon setting at dusk right above Mt Whitney in Sierra Nevada, the highest point in the contiguous US. The crescent moon is accompanied by the gentle glow of Earthshine -the Earth illumination on the dark night side of the moon. It is also called the Da Vinci Glow, as Leonardo was one of the first who explained this, in the early 16th century.

At night it looked like a fantasy world of gentle giants and walking trees! Madagascar is the origin of all baobab tree species. In Malagasy they are called renala, meaning Mother of the Forest. Baobabs are resilient and majestic. The oldest known baobabs are about 2000 years old. The bright star in the upper-right is Arcturus. The orange-green cast in the sky is airglow; natural emission from the Earth upper atmosphere which is dim and colorless to the eyes. This new released image is now available on my print store (link in bio).

Tonight is the peak of Geminid Meteor Shower, best visible in late evening and near midnight. It’s usually the best meteor shower of the year, if you can find clear skies! This clip, filmed last night in my backyard while I was sleeping inside, shows a number of Geminids under bright urban sky of the Boston area. In dark skies the shower is much more interesting to watch. The video ends with a surprise capture of a Great White Egret flying in the distance and lit by the moon. This species hunts mainly at night.
