That’s why I became a photographer — a must-see.

On this day, December the 18th, in 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blow-Up, starring David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Birkin, and Veruschka, opened in the U.S.

Loosely based on the London photography scene, and inspired by the lives of photographers such as David Bailey, Terence Donovan, David Montgomery and John Cowan the film led to a surge in both camera sales and photography course enrolment in the US. ...................

Remembering photographer O. Winston Link who was born on this on this day, December the 16th, in 1914.

Link, seen on the left in this self portrait, was best know for his large format night photography, often featuring steam trains.

He is pictured here with some of his lighting equipment and his assistant George Thom.

You can read more about his life and see samples of his work via the link that I'll add in the comments section.

Most amazing work.

Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt (pictured) was born on this day, December 6th in 1898.

During his career Eisenstaedt captured many iconic images of notable 'celebrities' such as Monroe, Einstein, and Churchill.

However, his best known image remains his August 14, 1945 photograph taken during the spontaneous celebrations that took place in New York's Times Square when news of the end of WW2 was announced.

Even today controversy remains regarding the circumstances of the photo, the identity of the participants, and the ethics of the action depicted - with multiple individuals having claimed to be one or other of the individuals pictured.

But maybe the anonymity of the image remains one of it's strengths? - plus, of course, he was a photojournalist documenting actual events, and not there to pass moral judgment or censor history.

Happy Saturday all - and wherever you end up remember to take your camera - because as Eisenstaedt demonstrated the best opportunities do not always make appointments ;).......

Sebastião Salgado did indeed focus a lot on reforestation work along with his wife. They set up a project called Instituto Terra, and that’s all about restoring a piece of the Atlantic rainforest in Brazil. They planted millions of trees and turned this land back into a thriving forest. So even though he’s passed away now, his legacy definitely includes that huge environmental contribution.
