Something about having a great sunset to compliment a semi difficult to find and photograph species (Northern Hawk Owl) gives me a sense of accomplishment. So many days are spent in the field shooting in gray or low flat light, so when this happens I am elated.

Ever wonder why some nature photography stand out more than others? One reason may be the use of a visual technique known as "leading lines." In the photograph above, professional Ian Plant uses the striations in the slot canyon's sandstone to draw viewers into the photo. The composition creates an illusion of depth, tricking us into believing we are right there in that slot canyon! Next time you're out photographing nature, try aiming your camera towards natural lines and patterns.

Happy Earth Day! Did you know that MassArt is committed to climate action? In 2019/20, MassArt community members created a MassArt Climate Action Plan with the goal of 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and 100% by 2050.

In addition to our Climate Action Plan, MassArt supports environmental action by offering a minor in Sustainability through the Colleges of the Fenway, the MassArt ReStore, the Sustainability Studio, the LEED Gold certified Tree House Residence, throughout MassArt's curriculum, and more.

Here, students in a Liberal Arts class taught by Professor Jennifer Cole hold class in the Fens during the Spring 2019 semester.
