This was such an awesome, informative, and inspiring livestream that my gurl did last night.
I was totally engaged in her story of going from winning a signing deal through a contest, to bring told not to discuss the details of her contract with the man who also won the contest. She talked with him ability it anyways, only to learn and discover that while she was psyched that they had inked a deal with her for ONE EP TRACK and that’s it; they had offered him, who’s prize was supposed to be the same: “a record deal”... THEY offered him the security of a _____year deal! (Years!!!)
It is so humbling hearing her speak her truth, how she interpreted this slight. How it affected her in almost all ways as an artist who just rely on her faith that the music would speak for itself and that there wouldn’t be shady dealings..especially around music.
The entire livestream was awesome, and that was just a tiny story of what she shared because she, Jokia, engaged with us the audience! She told me that I wasn’t annoying her with my comments and questions! She answered my questions about how she writes songs (lyrics first or melody first: see her answer in the video) and she answered my questions about when a song is truly done being worked on.
During the livestream, I made a point to forward and send the feed to at least 10 music artists I respect (maybe I don’t know them) and suggested they check her out.
Why? Because this is how being a promoter of anything works.
You see content you vibe with, you organically want other who you think will appreciate it...to know about it, and you share.
Over time, the quality of the content you are sharing and curating, will speak leaps and bounds more then my words can at least.
I hoped maybe someone bigger then me would see and hear her, and lend her their platform.
If that isn’t what we have the potential to do with - what should we use it for? Eventually we wioo all become tired and exhausted of seeking self validation... where do we evolve from here if social media isn’t going away?
Events/streams like this one give me a little bit of hope and they keep the tinder’s of hope alive
