In this content era, I feel that social media has lost all of the ‘social’ and has just become a nonstop bombardment of everyone trying to sell you something. It’s tiring, and in my opinion is why there’s such a large swath of burnout across most artistic fields.

We’re being forced to switch from a mindset of creating something that feels genuine and speaks to ourselves as artists to belting out as much content as possible as fast as possible so as not to get left behind and risk losing our living. It was the epiphany I came to fairly recently and is the reason why I myself had such severe burnout this year; it was because I stopped creating and I stopped taking photos for me and started creating for social media. I fell into the trap of chasing things that were popular or “trendy” instead of doubling down on what I enjoyed and what drove me to create a high quality of work.

My last few photos I posted here have reflected me shooting for me. They are the beginning steps of me finally feeling my creativity blooming again; my acceptance that I don’t do photography to get rich or popular, I do it because I love it. I do it because this is my way of speaking to the world.

Social media and its toxic algorithms want to force all of us to churn out content until we either burn out or quit, and if that’s how you choose to engage with the world, it’s not my place to judge you for it. I just think that for some of us, every once in a while it’s good to stop, step back, and remind yourself why you started doing all of this in the first place.

Then realign, and get creating again.

Reviing this page (or at least crossposting to it, hahaha).

I love mixing flash with ambient. It was a fun challenge making the flash subtle enough not to overpower the window light but still add dimension.

Scrims are definitely a very under utilized tool in photography, although understandably so considering this one was… 6’ x 6’. Try setting that up outside 😅.

I’ve always been averse to couple’s portraits because I tend to find them boring and uncreative. But having started to follow (and even second shoot with) some photographers I respect and admire, I got some advice: why not just make them creative?

Seems pretty obvious right? Do the thing I’m already doing with my self-portraits and editorial work but put couples in front of the camera instead. Can’t wait to see what I come up with in my couple’s sessions over the next couple of weeks.

This is certainly my year of “I’m posting whatever the hell I want and seeing what I vibe with.”

In lieu of me seeing a lot of people refreshing their LinkedIn headshots or just getting some refreshing photos for the new year, I wanted to offer some brief bits of advice for those planning photoshoots .

P.S. if you're in the DC/MD/VA area and want some new photos, then you know where to find me ;)

A couple of short tips to make sure you look great and feel great in front of the camera.

Gotta remind myself to take the time to breathe. It’s been a hectic last few months but I’ve been working hard on a few things (both photography and non-photography related). So pardon the radio silence lately!

Here are some highlights with my session with last week in Boston.

My photography is in a weird state of flux at the moment. I know what I want my work to look like. I just gotta find the niche field it fits. Find my home, my people.

I’ve also been doing a lot of creative soul-searching. For example, shooting a lot less stuff I don’t enjoy and really pushing the services I actually enjoy. Sometimes when you do the arts for a living, you forget that you’re actually supposed to live and ENJOY the process of creating, otherwise, why are you even doing it in the first place?
