No guts, no glory!

The world’s industrial fishing fleet has been eyeing the ocean’s mesopelagic zone (aka the Ocean Twilight Zone) for its abundant fish populations. Marine biologists at WHOI have been surveying the gut contents of marlin, tuna, and sharks to understand how much apex predators rely on life in this mysterious middle ocean, and how extractive efforts could ripple up the ocean’s already taxed food chain.

Had the pleasure of photographing new headshots for Emmy award-winning journalist long-time PBS collaborator, Miles O’Brien, for his podcast “Miles Ahead,” a new show that explores science-based solutions to our toughest problems.

I recently learned Miles is in Antarctica, documenting the Thwaites Glacier, oft referred to as the “doomsday glacier” for the implications to sea level rise as this ice mass falters in a warming climate.

Portraits for artist and UMass Dartmouth professor Janine Wong, whose current body of work expresses poetry through color contrasts, a subgenre of art called duo types. Wong was featured in .ocean’s Oceanus Magazine several issues back for her clever use of chemistry-intensive marbling to capture the hidden world of mesoscale ocean currents.

Taken at her home with her husband in Milton, Mass.

One of my favorite photos from 2025. Even in harsh daylight, Half Dome didn’t disappoint. After only two days in Yosemite, I could understand why Ansel Adams spent so much time in the park.

I’m deeply grateful I got to visit this national treasure. This, to me, is what makes our country great. We are called to protect it.

If I told you how tiny these teeth are you may not believe me.

Elizabeth Sibert is in her lab studying fossilized fish teeth to glean important knowledge about how fishes reacted to past climate periods, and what we can expect as we humans raise the temperature of our planet today.

In her PALEO Fish lab .ocean, she sifts through cores of soil from the deep-sea. Filtering and filtering again, she pairs down her sample to fine, sand-like grains. Under the microscope, she takes a paint brush with a tip no thicker than a pinch of hair to parse out fossils from sediment.

Even in oceanography, the past is not quaint, but incredibly useful. From each layer of the core, some separated by millions of years of time, these microscopic teeth are evidence of major jumps in evolution, and life’s will to carry on.

Gotta love a little peak at the backdrop. I took this while photographing WHOI assistant scientist and seismo-acoustic expert, Gil Averbuch, for an Oceanus Magazine story on detecting a volcanic eruption at sea last year.
