Big things come in small packages, right? In this case, the small jar held by WHOI Chief Science Officer and Senior Scientist Dennis McGillicuddy contains sargassum, a free-floating brown algae that’s made headlines for inundating Florida’s coastline in recent years. These massive blooms may be caused by a combination of changing ocean conditions, including shifting currents, rising temperatures, and an influx of nutrients from both land and sea.

Rotting sargassum piles on Florida’s beaches generates unsavory odors that drive away beachgoers and demand costly cleanups.

Suffice it to say, I didn’t ask Dennis to open the jar.

Arctic science has many faces—it’s my honor to bring some of them to your feed. This is Maddie Smith, an assistant scientist in Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering at WHOI.

I photographed Maddie for a story about tracking the retreat of landfast ice along the coast of Northern Alaska.

As our planet warms, seasonal landfast ice is showing up later and for less time each year. Without this coastal buffer, remote communities are increasingly vulnerable to violent storms that cause coastal erosion. In a group led by Sandia National Laboratories, Maddie measures this decline by sending laser signals through internet cables on the seafloor and measuring vibrations in this signal caused by the waves above. Less landfast ice = more wave action above the cable.

Maddie’s work is helping remote communities to—on some level—quantify the real impacts of climate change.

I had the pleasure of being asked to photograph the former Mayor of South Bend Indiana and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg at a fundraising event in Marion, Mass. last month.

Mr. Buttigieg addressed growing concerns of the current administration’s assault on civil rights, science, and healthcare with a stiff upper lip and a great deal of hope—that maybe, with so many safety nets undone, we may also have an opportunity to replace our old social services with something even better for the average American.

Saddle up! 🐎🦞

Scientists in Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst.’s Sensory Ecology Lab want to know how noise from underwater and coastal construction are impacting fisheries like the American Lobster. Here, they fit sensor packages to test subjects using snorkel mouthpieces and some Velcro straps, measuring changes in the animal’s energy and movement during periods of underwater pile-driving nearby.

No guts, no glory!

The world’s industrial fishing fleet has been eyeing the ocean’s mesopelagic zone (aka the Ocean Twilight Zone) for its abundant fish populations. Marine biologists at WHOI have been surveying the gut contents of marlin, tuna, and sharks to understand how much apex predators rely on life in this mysterious middle ocean, and how extractive efforts could ripple up the ocean’s already taxed food chain.

Had the pleasure of photographing new headshots for Emmy award-winning journalist long-time PBS collaborator, Miles O’Brien, for his podcast “Miles Ahead,” a new show that explores science-based solutions to our toughest problems.

I recently learned Miles is in Antarctica, documenting the Thwaites Glacier, oft referred to as the “doomsday glacier” for the implications to sea level rise as this ice mass falters in a warming climate.
