The Arizona desert has a way of making every photograph feel larger than life.

Another image of Amarielle Burns from our 2016 Tucson session. For this shot, I wanted to pull back and let the landscape become a major part of the composition. The rugged mountains, rocky terrain, and scattered saguaros provided an incredible natural backdrop while Amarielle’s pose gave the image a strong fashion feel.

This is one of the things I loved about photographing in Tucson—you could create a portrait and a landscape photograph at the same time.

Another look from my 2016 Tucson session with Amarielle Burns.

For this image, I photographed from below and let the deep Arizona sky become part of the composition. Amarielle’s pose, the rough stone, and that incredible blue sky came together to create something bold and a little unexpected.

I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with angles during a shoot. Sometimes changing where the photographer stands can turn the same location, same model, and same outfit into an entirely different photograph.

A completely different mood from the same Tucson session with Amarielle Burns.

For this shot, we traded the wide-open Arizona landscape for the shade and textures of an old stone structure. Amarielle brought a playful attitude to the frame, and I really like the contrast between her colorful styling and the rough, weathered surroundings.

One of the things I enjoy about a good location is finding multiple ways to use it. Sometimes moving just a short distance can completely change the look and feel of a shoot.

Sometimes the landscape deserves to be just as much a part of the portrait as the model.

This shot of Amarielle Burns comes from a session we did in Tucson back in 2016. I love the sense of scale in this image—Amarielle standing against the rugged Arizona desert with the mountains, towering saguaros, and that huge blue sky stretching out around her.

Rather than focusing on a traditional close-up portrait, I wanted this shot to capture both the model and the environment. The result is one of those images that feels less posed and more like a moment from a journey through the desert.

Military history makes an incredible backdrop for fashion photography.

Another shot of Kaila Stone from our session at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. For this shoot, Kaila wore one of my old U.S. Air Force BDU uniforms, giving us the opportunity to blend the military character of the aircraft with a completely different style of portrait photography.

I especially like this image because everything came together—the aircraft markings, the weathered BDU, Kaila’s expression, and the contrast between the rugged military setting and the fashion portrait.

Sometimes the location doesn't just serve as the background. It becomes part of the photograph.

Military Heritage Meets Fashion

Another favorite from my shoot with Kaila Stone at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson.

For this part of the session, we paired the aircraft backdrop with one of my old U.S. Air Force BDU uniforms. I really like how this shot came together—the vintage woodland camouflage and military patches against the aircraft, combined with Kaila's pose and styling, gave the photograph exactly the military-inspired fashion feel we were looking for.

It’s also pretty cool seeing a uniform I once wore become part of something completely different years later.

There’s something special about bringing a little history into a fashion shoot.

For this session with Kaila Stone, we wanted to create a military-inspired look that complemented the aircraft and the incredible setting at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The BDU blouse Kaila is wearing isn’t a costume or something we picked up for the shoot—it was one of my old uniforms from my time in the Air Force.

Seeing a piece of my own military past take on an entirely different life in front of the camera made this shoot especially memorable. Kaila absolutely nailed the look, giving us a great blend of military heritage, aviation, and fashion.
