What does 2027 have in store for Louisiana Downs? The new laws regarding video poker money will funnel more funds into purses but will it be enough? The race days for 2026 were cut to the legal minimum – and then some. The idea was that it was better to have fewer days with slightly higher purses. The handle for 2026 was much lower than 2025 - several million less, using data from Equibase. The slot revenue from the casino is holding steady with last year’s earnings despite officials from LAD assuring the racing commission that revenue would go up when road construction was finished. If 2027 has the same amount of revenue from slots and reduced handle money, what does that mean for purses and race days? The problem is not unique to Louisiana Downs. Most casinos are seeing loss. According to the website, Louisiana Casino Gaming Revenue (lagamingrevenue.com), travel-dependent, destination-style resort corridors are seeing reduced business. Shreveport/Bossier has experienced a -8.6% drop year over year casino revenue. The idea is that consumers prefer closer-to-home, lower cost entertainment over destination travel that carries lodging, dining, and transportation overhead. Currently the only casino in Louisiana making less money than Louisiana Downs is Sam’s Town casino. Every year slot revenue at LAD goes down. Revenue is down almost $10 million dollars a year since Harrah’s sold it to new owners in 2021. The numbers do not look good.
