Just got back from a week on the Alaska coast, chasing coastal grizzlies in the streams on the tundra of Katmai National Park. There's nothing quite like sitting quietly in a stream with a 100- 400 mm lens while giant bears chase fish next to you.

I came home with some of my favorite wildlife images to date — a few are now up in my print shop, alongside my landscape, Milky Way, bird, and African wildlife collections.

This big bear was so focused on salmon that it stalked right by us within about 20 feet as we were in the water, tucked up against the bank. She only looked our way when the fish she watched swam toward us, prompting me to tell her that was “too close.” Shot on my and

I just returned from 5 days of bearphotography in Alaska with Alaska Grizzly Safaris, and can’t wait to share some of the images I captured. I had three types of shot I was looking for: bears fishing, bears interacting with each other (or us), and anything with cubs. This might be my favorite picture of a bear chasing a salmon toward us. The annual battles between our crows and the juvenile cooper’s hawks have begun, and there are lots of opportunities to photograph these guys from home. This one gave me a nice pose before taking off. Nikon

We went on a neighborhood bird walk this morning and were lucky enough to find a Northern Flicker nest, some Western Tanagers, Black-Throated Gray Warblers, and more.

Mirror Image - The reflection of this eagle catching a fish made the image so much more interesting. Taken at Seabeck in WA last week with my Nikon Z8 and Nikon 180-600mm.

Two more images of the bald eagles at Seabeck in June. I liked these for the angles and motion of the first bird as it wheeled in the air to turn and dive on its prey, and for the reflection in the 2nd image that makes you look more closely to examine what you are seeing.

Reflections on eagles: Ready for Bald Eagle Photos? I was at Hood Canal this week watching eagles hunt midshipman fish as the tide receded and left the fish trapped in the oyster beds. I enjoyed the reflections I captured on this image and one other that I’ll share next. Nikon

Milky Way nightscapes are the most technically challenging photo projects I have done, from the planning to the editing, but I sure do enjoy them. I shot the foreground during blue hour, and then used a Benro Polaris to shoot 10 tracked sky images with 2.5 minute exposures on my Nikon Z8 and 24-70mm lens. I blended them and edited in Photoshop.
