Sometimes nature does the work for you. I’ve walked the woods near our home for years looking for a daylight photo opportunity with a Great Horned Owl. I hear them all the time at night, but have never gotten a close enough, or long enough, look at them during the day for a decent photo. Today, the crows behind my house led me right to one. They were very agitated about this beauty’s presence in their woods, and chased him from this perch a few seconds after I arrived.

Buffalo -1, Lions - 0: On one of our first morning game drives In the Maasai Mara, we were driving down the hill from our camp when we saw two buffalo on the right side of the road. On the left was another, and then four lions came out of the brush right next to us and halfheartedly went after the lone bull. The buffalo charged them a few times, then made a break for it. He made it back across the road with a lioness on his tail, and when he reunited with the other two bulls, the lions realized the odds were not in their favor. Instead, they took down a Maasai cow later that night.

Minimalism in the Mara: The open grasslands of Kenya’s Maasai Mara allow for wildlife photos with clean backgrounds, sometimes highlighting one lone acacia tree with your animal subject. Here we have a giraffe “blending” with a tree, and a topi standing watch.

Before, during, and after a hunt - These photos are of the same cheetah on two consecutive days in the Maasai Mara. We saw the cheetah resting, then left and had lunch next to a herd of Topi. Next thing we knew, the cheetah was unstealthily charging after the Topi from a distance. They all got away. The next day, we saw the same cat stalk, chase, and take a female impala. He was much more stealthy on that hunt, and came away with a meal. Even so, he probably didn’t keep it for long, as the noise of the hunt drew a hyena and three male lions to the area within minutes.

Even the cheetah knows the importance of stretching. Did you know that the cheetah’s flexible spine helps it take extra long and rapid strides that allow it to accelerate from 0-70 mph in about 3 seconds? I’ll share some photos showing how it uses that speed soon! Shot on safari with Painted Dog Safari in Kenya’s Maasai Mara on my Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z180-600mm f/5.6-6.3
