Having a baby this winter in Boise? ❄️

Let me tell you why I love a winter newborn session so much.

There’s something about photographing a brand-new baby during the colder months that just feels extra cozy.

The soft layers.
The warm textures.
The neutral tones.
The snuggly details.
That beautiful winter light.

And you don’t have to figure out how to bring that feeling to your session.
That’s my job. 🤍

I have the wraps, textures, layers, and styling ready to create a winter newborn photography experience that feels cozy and beautiful without adding another thing to your to-do list.

So if you’re expecting a baby this winter, don’t overlook a winter newborn session.

It might just become one of my favorite seasons to photograph your baby.

DM to book yours early.

Becoming a mom has a way of moving you to the bottom of your own to-do list.

Especially in those first few weeks postpartum, when your entire day can feel like a rotation of feeding, changing, soothing, recovering, and trying to remember when you last ate something yourself.

As a mom of three and a Boise newborn photographer, I see this stage all the time. New moms are usually very focused on what the baby needs, while their own needs become something they’ll get to “later.”

So this is your reminder that taking care of yourself counts, too.

Eat the meal.
Take the shower.
Hand the baby to someone else and rest.
Accept the help.
Leave the laundry alone for a minute.

It doesn’t need to be a whole self-care routine. Sometimes postpartum self-care is simply making sure you’re not running on caffeine and half a granola bar by 3 p.m.

Those early newborn weeks are a lot. Give yourself a little room to recover, adjust, and figure things out as you go.

You do not have to do everything perfectly. You just need to remember that you’re one of the people who needs taking care of, too.

As a mom of 3 boys, I’ve heard just about every comment you can imagine when someone finds out they’re having “another” boy.

“Were you hoping for a girl?”
“Maybe you’ll try again!”
“Your house is going to be wild!” 😂
“Looks like you’ll always be the mother-in-law!”

And I get it. Most people mean well.

But after raising three boys, I can tell you this:

There is nothing “less than” about having another boy.

So instead of focusing on the baby she isn’t having, let’s celebrate the baby she is having.

Celebrate the little boy who is already so loved.
Celebrate the brothers who are about to have another best friend.
Celebrate the noise, the laughter, the adventures, and yes… probably a little chaos too. 😂

Because I wouldn’t trade being a boy mom three times over for anything.

So the next time you see a mom pregnant with “another” baby boy, choose your words carefully.

Don’t make her feel like she’s missing out.

Remind her just how lucky she is. 🤍

Moms, I know what you see during a newborn session.

You see me wrapping your baby.
Rocking them.
Making little adjustments.
Taking the shots.
Stopping for a feeding break.
Waiting when they need a minute.

And sometimes you probably wonder how we’re ever going to get the beautiful images you came in hoping for. 😂

But after doing this for years, I’ve learned something:

The session doesn’t have to look perfect for the final images to be beautiful.

I’ve seen the fussy moments turn into the sweetest photos.
The resettling turn into that perfect sleepy shot.
The “we might have to start over” moments turn into some of my favorite images.

And then I show you the finished gallery.

That’s when you get to see what I was seeing all along.

Your baby.
Your connection.
Those tiny details you won’t get back.

The behind-the-scenes moments are how we get there.

But these are what you get to keep. 🤍

By the time parents walk through the studio doors, all of that has already been handled.

Because preparing for a newborn is enough work already.

Photos shouldn't add another project to your list.

How long do newborn sessions take?

If you ask Google, you'll probably see the same answer over and over again: 3-4 hours.

Here's where I have a slightly different perspective.

I don't think babies are the reason most newborn sessions take that long.

Yes, newborns need to eat. They need cuddles. They need diaper changes and breaks. That's simply life in the fourth trimester, and those moments should never be rushed.

But I also think photographers can become so focused on creating one specific image that we forget what's most important: the family in front of us.

If a baby tells me they don't want to do a pose, I don't spend the next 30 minutes trying to convince them otherwise.

We pivot.

We wrap.

We snuggle with mom.

We move on to something they're happy doing.

Ironically, that's usually when we create the images parents end up loving the most.

After photographing newborns for the last 9 years, I've learned that following a baby's lead almost always creates a more relaxed experience, more variety in the final gallery, and gets exhausted new parents back home sooner.

Now, don't get me wrong... I absolutely love creating those technically perfect images where every finger is just right and every tiny detail is exactly where I envisioned it.

But that's why I occasionally bring babies into the studio just to model.

That's the time for me to slow down, experiment, perfect a new pose, or spend 20 minutes getting that one portfolio image.

When it's your newborn session, my priority isn't building my portfolio.

It's documenting your baby, giving you a wonderful experience, and getting your tired family back home.

And to my fellow newborn photographers... I promise this isn't an attack on you. We all develop our own workflows, and every photographer has a different approach. I'm genuinely curious because I know there are some incredibly talented artists who schedule 3, 4, or even 5-hour sessions.

Tell me why.

What do you feel longer sessions allow you to create that couldn't be accomplished in less time? I'd genuinely love to hear your perspective.

And if you're a parent, how long did your newborn session last?

My oldest starts high school this week, and I’m feeling the passage of time more than usual.

I breastfed all three of my boys, but somehow I only have one photo of myself feeding my youngest.

Breastfeeding was one of the hardest parts of those early days, but it’s also one of the things I miss the most. I miss the quiet connection, the weight of a sleepy baby in my arms, and the way they would look up at me while they ate.

I remember those middle-of-the-night feedings like they were yesterday. At the time, I was exhausted and convinced I would be relieved when no one needed me at 2 a.m. Now, no one does, and somehow that makes me a little sad.

That one photo brings all of it back.

Most moms don’t come into their newborn session specifically asking for a feeding photo. But when we take one, it often becomes a photograph they’re especially grateful to have.

It doesn’t have to be picture-perfect. Whether you breastfeed, bottle-feed, or do both, feeding your baby is part of your story. If it feels meaningful to you, I will always encourage you to document it.

Because one day, that baby may be starting high school, and you’ll be so grateful you have a photograph that takes you right back to those quiet moments together.

The cutest part of family photos? The toddlers. 🤍

The most unpredictable part? Also the toddlers. 😂

Tell me your funniest photo day story. I know you’ve got one… and I think we could all use a good laugh today.

Just wanted to send a little love to the mamas in their third trimester. 🤍

I know how long these last weeks of pregnancy can feel—the sleepless nights, sore hips, and wondering if you’ll ever get comfortable again.

You’re so much closer than it feels to meeting your baby. I can’t wait for you to experience that moment. 💛
