How long do newborn sessions take?
If you ask Google, you'll probably see the same answer over and over again: 3-4 hours.
Here's where I have a slightly different perspective.
I don't think babies are the reason most newborn sessions take that long.
Yes, newborns need to eat. They need cuddles. They need diaper changes and breaks. That's simply life in the fourth trimester, and those moments should never be rushed.
But I also think photographers can become so focused on creating one specific image that we forget what's most important: the family in front of us.
If a baby tells me they don't want to do a pose, I don't spend the next 30 minutes trying to convince them otherwise.
We pivot.
We wrap.
We snuggle with mom.
We move on to something they're happy doing.
Ironically, that's usually when we create the images parents end up loving the most.
After photographing newborns for the last 9 years, I've learned that following a baby's lead almost always creates a more relaxed experience, more variety in the final gallery, and gets exhausted new parents back home sooner.
Now, don't get me wrong... I absolutely love creating those technically perfect images where every finger is just right and every tiny detail is exactly where I envisioned it.
But that's why I occasionally bring babies into the studio just to model.
That's the time for me to slow down, experiment, perfect a new pose, or spend 20 minutes getting that one portfolio image.
When it's your newborn session, my priority isn't building my portfolio.
It's documenting your baby, giving you a wonderful experience, and getting your tired family back home.
And to my fellow newborn photographers... I promise this isn't an attack on you. We all develop our own workflows, and every photographer has a different approach. I'm genuinely curious because I know there are some incredibly talented artists who schedule 3, 4, or even 5-hour sessions.
Tell me why.
What do you feel longer sessions allow you to create that couldn't be accomplished in less time? I'd genuinely love to hear your perspective.
And if you're a parent, how long did your newborn session last?
