Kaylyn Franks Photography

Kaylyn Franks Photography I’m a pro photographer capturing adventures in the wilderness of Idaho, Utah, and beyond.

As a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, nothing sets my soul on fire like finding a breathtaking waterfall. When people ask what it's like, I used to say, "You had to be there," but now I share that feeling through my fine art photography. Since reconnecting with my creative passion in 2012, I’ve shot over 15,000 photos of far-flung landscapes, beautiful abstract patterns, and all of nature's wonders. W

hen I'm not deep in the forests or high atop the mountains, I create custom print galleries for homes and businesses and offer on-site consultations to help choose the best photos and print mediums, including canvas, fine art paper, steel, and more. I love to explore new places, of course, so I would be happy to capture your life celebrations, business events, or any other exciting outdoor moments. Visit my website to place an order or share your photo shoot idea, and I’ll make sure every detail is picture perfect.

The next leg of Artisan October journey was to Hanksville, Utah. I I passed through Hanksville 12 years ago on a different adventure and considered it nothing more than a widespot in the road. Oh my, was I wrong....

Ever heard of Hanksville Badlands? Ever heard of Badass Professor Caryn Esplin? Do you know what happens when you combine the two? The Ultimate Badlands Photo Expedition!!!! An explosion of geological formations; the highest level of shared knowledge in photography, droning, post processing, and communication; unlimited photo opportunities; amazing lodging, over the top food, community, and high adventure!!! There is never a dull moment with endless hours to create!! The precision to detail is unmatched. No stone unturned, with a backup plan for everything!!! It’s like boarding a space ship and traveling to Mars!! A truly unworldly experience!!!

I included a few Iphone/Drone shots for a sneak preview. With 2700 photos to sort and process, it will be a bit before I share stuff from my big girl camera:0)!! I am quite certain I will be adding a drone to my photo toolbox! What a hoot! And the photos are mind-blowing. Check out Caryn Esplin Photo Workshops for a sneak peek!!

The Trifecta of my September fly fishing trips was on the Green River below Flaming Gorge. This has been a bucket list for quite some time, so when I saw the drift trip for two with Aaron Knickrehm at the Henry's Fork Foundation (HFF)Auction, I knew it would be mine!!! Aaron is the grandson of Joy & Don Knickrehm

It was an honor to join Joy & Don at their table again this year. They have been icons in the fly fishing industry since the mid 90's, when they opened the Ultimate Angler, which was later renamed the Idaho Angler. Don has served on the HFF board for numerous years. Together they have volunteered their time to our community to educate and elevate the art of fly fishing.

When the trip became mine, the first person that came to mind to invite was Joy. We have been friends for 30+ years, but we had never done a fly fishing trip together. She was so excited to be able to fish with her grandson again!!

We met Aaron early in the morning and were quickly introduced to all the guides in the parking lot. Aaron ensured everyone knew Grandma had come to fish with him. Once we are on the river, he continued to introduce Grandma to all the guides we passed. We reached the location Aaron felt would fish well and started casting. Joy is an elegant caster and holds the master FFI certification. She trained under Joan Wolff, the Godmother of fly casting!! As far as I am concerned, Joy Knickrehm is Idaho's Godmother of fly fishing!!!!

We got into some beautiful fish, most of them browns. The water on the Green River is crystal clear. We quickly found Aaron to be one fishy guide. By the end of the day, we were pooped from catching so many nice fish.

The next morning Aaron informed us we were the talk at the "Guide Row BBQ" about our casting and all the fish we caught. He even mentioned to Joy the idea of returning to hold a casting clinic. The love between them was so heartwarming!!

The trip was incredibly memorable and we hope to return again to fish with Aaron. He is highly respected by his fellow guides and considered one hell of an oarsman!!! He will definitely carry on the Knickrehm passion for fly fishing. You can book a trip with him at Flaming Gorge Resort.

What started out to be a trip into British Columbia, ended up being a short trip to the Salmon River Canyon. It does not matter how many times I travel to this country, my heart skips a beat at the absolute beauty and majesty!!!

Our travels took us along the Main Salmon the first day. Gift of the Forgotten iPhone was a result of leaving my iPhone in the restroom at Vinegar Creek and realizing it 17 miles later!!!! We stopped at this spot for lunch on the way back to camp. What an absolute gift! This is now my 2nd favorite photo of the Salmon River.

The second day we ventured up Allison Creek to Florence! The views were out of this world at 6500'.

Enjoy!!!

When I head out on an adventure, I am always looking for photo opts with horses. 99.9% of the time their heads are down grazing. I finally got lucky on my way home from the Big Horn. I was looking for the perfect photo of the Wind River Range, when I happened upon this small herd of horses. To my delight their heads were up and fully engaged. Two of them put on quite a performance for me!! Enjoy!!!

I recently returned from a fly fishing trip on the Big Horn in Wyoming. The fishing was a bit tough, but the adventure to and from made the trip totally worth it.

My step father, Chuck Kelley, often talked about being raised on the Heart 6 Ranch in Wyoming and how he had to ski 2 miles to catch the bus in the winter. I do not ever recall him telling me about the view from the ranch!!! Holy Moly... I Wish I Were a Kid Again!!!! Enjoy.

A longtime client inspired me to start taking multi-frame and sometimes multi-row panoramas on my adventures. Panos tell a different story than a single photo. Snake River Dancing with the Owyhee's showcases the vastness of the Snake River Canyon and Owyhee Mountain Range. Enjoy!!!

It is so fun to return to my photography as I prepare for Art & Roses June 2, 2024.

Lovely Day for a Boat Ride was taken at Swan Falls lookout point. My adventures took me from Bruneau to Murphy in search of an epic photo of the Owyhee Mountain range. It wasn't until I hopped the river and meandered along the north side that I happened on this perfect location. Enjoy!!!
