Follow me on Instagram for regular updates on my projects! :) Hi there!
(2)

I am a digital photographer that has her roots in film. Because of this, my digital photos are uniquely and thoughtfully composed, showcase real and authentic emotion, and exhibit a film-like quality. I absolutely love to capture couples that are dating, engaged and even married! I also adore shooting individual portraits and encapsulating those special moments or milestones in your life. I would love to hear from you and begin to discuss how we will capture your special moment!

I stopped photographing grad photos many years ago.

When I first started my business, I naturally took any portrait requests that came my way. And living in a college town, that meant many of them were for grad photos.

But after one season of doing them, I decided it wasn’t for me.

I disliked how boxed in I felt as an artist. We always had a checklist of locations and landmarks to get to and it was always the same ones.
We had to wait in long lines and when it was finally our turn we had to scurry up and try to be as efficient as possible with our time slot, lest we screw up the delicate balance amongst the waiting spectators.

There was no time for creative expression. Everyone was dressed the same and everyone wanted the same thing.
It was not an environment I could draw fulfillment from.

But then my girl Makenna came along. And she loved my style of work for what it was and she told me the best thing any artist always loves to hear.
She said she trusted me and wanted me to have full creative freedom.

And something inside of me blossomed at those words.
What we had was the most beautiful session together, exploring the nooks and crannies of the place she called home for the past 4 years.

It was everything I could have wanted for her and it showed me a way to photograph graduates that I deeply connected with.

I want my graduates to have a more individualized experience. I want their grad photos to have the lived in feel of all the memories they had created there.
I want their photos to be more than just stiff poses by statues, but for them to say something about who they are and who they may someday become.

I know it’s not for everyone, and that’s alright. My work has always been deeply personal to me.
My only hope is to find those few who crave this type of connection and deeper experience at their sessions too.
And make this meaningful achievement about so much more than just getting the shot.
💛

I often tell my clients to “trust the process”, but I didn’t realize that I had to trust it too.

I had a vision for this shoot and it wasn’t until I was in the editing room that I realized something was missing.

I was chasing a gritty and grunge like texture in my edit for this shoot akin to a flattened magazine clipping from a 90s Thrasher spread.

It took me 2 years to figure out how to get there. 🙃

Which is just another reminder why it’s always good to step out of your comfort zone and try new things.
I ended up learning more from this process than any new preset purchase could have done for me.

Excited to experiment more with this and see where it takes me. 😊

Fall Time 🤝 Family Photos

Just now getting around to sharing some sessions from the past few months.
I love how I can just feel the crisp Autumn air in these photos just by looking at them. So nice to be able to pop into an open meadow in the backyard, but then warm up in a cozy home for some snuggly photos. Best of both worlds in these. :)

We had about 30 min to get some great photos before the rain came in, and we accepted that challenge. 😮‍💨
Getting to work with other photographers is not only an honor but also usually means we can dive straight into the good stuff and skip the warm up. Soo in love with how Layla’s photos came out. Keep your eyes out for the branding portion of her session in another post. 👀

Family sessions that from the client perspective seem like absolute chaos are the types of sessions that are the most beautiful to me. 🥰
Because this is childhood and this is parenting. It’s not polished and it’s everywhere all at once.
My family sessions are not perfectly posed, but instead spontaneous and allow for personalities to bloom and guide our way. It feels more real to me this way. Where every unexpected twist and turn is delightful and rich with connection, it becomes less of a session and more of a little adventure you get to enjoy with your family for an afternoon. 😌

Would it even be Fall right now if I wasn’t insanely behind on posting sessions? 🙈
Second Kalupson sister brought the same incredible energy though and I couldn’t wait to get to these. Such a vibe. 🤩

The more I do this the less “posing” I do and instead find myself leaning towards “directing” my clients.
It becomes less about getting all the limbs into this specific look, but instead setting up the scene to produce a vague idea I have in my mind. I want it to feel as close to the image I am trying to convey. Sometimes it means giving the movement a bit of a backstory so they understand the vibe I am going for. Sometimes it’s less about the end product and more about what would a person do to end up in this position? It makes my work feel more continuous. Like a moment that was held still in an ongoing story.
And the more I do this the more stiff I find the standard idea of posing to be. If it is a continuous movement then the body relaxes. The body finds a way to execute it naturally and in a way that it wants to move.
I also have noticed that it has made a huge difference in the small details that subconsciously have a huge impact. For instance, hands. My eyes immediately go to peoples hands when I look at portraits now. Hands are so expressive and immediately tell if the person is truly in the moment or if they are feeling stiff and preoccupied with positioning. When hands look awkward I feel like it completely takes the viewer out of the moment, whether they realize it or not. The same goes for expressions, shoulders, and many other minute details.
With continuous storytelling posing, you allow your client to melt into the moment and find their rhythm. And also you get a ton more poses out of a single setup then you would otherwise.
I just love that no matter how long I have been doing this I somehow still manage to find ways to innovate and delve deeper into my craft. My work feels truer to myself with every passing year and that just feels so special to me. :)
