I see photographer ask questions like this on FB groups and photography forums all the time, especially during the busy season - they lost images due to an SD card failure or hard drive failure and what to do.

As unfortunate as that is, it’s also something that’s more common in this industry than people realize. From cards, to hard drives, to gear, its not a question of if, but when.

Technology isn’t perfect. Memory cards and gear fail. Files can corrupt. That’s reality.

That’s why one of the things I always encourage clients to ask is whether their photographer uses a dual card system and records images to both cards at the same time. If one card fails, the second card protects the work. Simple system. Big difference. And not not all camera's have a dual slot and not all photographer back up or use high quality cards (that need to be replaced because they have a finite life!)

Family sessions can often be redone. Weddings and once in a lifetime moments cannot. And yes, I’ve seen card and gear failures happen across all types of sessions, which is why preparation and systems matter so much.

Here are a few smart questions worth asking any photographer before booking:

• Do you shoot on dual memory cards
• How soon are images backed up after the session
• Do you have multiple backups
• What is your process if your gear breaks or files fail

This isn’t about fear. It’s about professionalism, preparation, and respecting people’s memories and addressing something that is really not taught to many photographers.

Your moments are valuable. Ask the questions!

✨ Every time I come across one of my photos being used by a local company, it’s a reminder of why I love what I do. Seeing those images out in the world - representing real people, real brands, and real stories - never loses its spark.

And it’s so nice to see brands actually making use of the images we’ve worked hard to create.

Grateful to collaborate with local businesses and help them bring their vision to life through photography. 📸

A Costly Lesson Too Many Photographers Learn Too Late

💾 Photographers, take note (and clients, too.)

If you’re a full-time photographer, your SD cards should be replaced every 1–2 years (https://www.slrlounge.com/replace-memory-card-qa/). Cards are based moreso on cycles rather than time. So, if you shoot rarely, they might last close to a decade, but that’s a huge gamble. Good quality SD cards aren’t cheap, but they’re far cheaper than losing someone’s wedding or once-in-a-lifetime photos.

Also, make sure your camera has two card slots and that you’re recording to both cards simultaneously. One corrupt card shouldn’t mean losing an entire gallery.

Every month, and more often in wedding season, I see photographers posting online after a card failure, desperately trying to recover images or find out what to tell the bride. Data recovery is costly and never guaranteed.

So if you’re hiring a photographer, ask them:
📍 How often do you replace your SD cards?
📍 Do you shoot dual-slot and back up in real time?

These are things most photographers aren’t taught, and many only learn the hard way. Don’t let that happen to you or your clients.
