I'm conflicted. The old telephone poles use less of a footprint are are not so intruding on the landscape. The down side is they are made of wood and there is the cost of upkeep. They are also vulnerable to extreme weather and power outages. The new poles are GIANTs and have a larger footprint on the landscape. They are made of steel (or metal of some kind) with cement bases that are planted deep into the ground. They are less vulnerable to extreme weather and are able to provided power faster and on a more consistent basis. But they are HUGE GIANTS that are ugly to look at, that's not to say that the old wooden ones are pretty but they are less intrusive to the views of our beautiful landscapes. It's a matter of esthetics vs efficiency. As a photographer, the esthetics of the landscape are important to me. Because I use a computer to edit my digital photos, receiving power on a consistent basis is a necessity. So I remain conflicted in my opinion of the old world vs the giants.
