Two sunflower fields;
two different times.☀️🌌

1) Summer Sunset near the River. (Canadian wildfires adding to the dramatic color of the sun.)
2) Sunflowers Under the Milky Way. (Illuminated with the help of a .)

Been doing some sunflower
photography recently. 🌻 Since North Dakota is the number one producer of sunflowers in the United States it's been easy to find a nearby field. There are still a few fields that have gorgeous flowers and some that are becoming full with seed. Hopefully I'll get some more chances before the season is over.

The Long Way Home ✨

Time stood still on this curvy road where the brief lights of fireflies danced beneath our Milky Way’s galactic core. Sounds of the river echoed in the distance along with the rusting leaves swaying in the night breeze.

The photo is a blended composition of one shot for the foreground, 24 stacked shots for the milky way and 24 shot for the lighting bugs. The Milky Way was stacked in Sequator and blend with the other shots in Photoshop using lighten mode to add the fireflies.

Prairie Lights.✨

I had so much fun at this creek watching the fireflies and northern lights. This is a slightly different set up to this creek I posted previously from the beginning hours of the 4th of July. Where that shot was a single 30 second exposure, this shot is composed of 4 shots brought into Photo Shop and using the Lighten blend mode and a mask layer to only add in the brightest area. The fireflies. This view is also shot at a different angle to avoid the yard light from the nearby ranch.

A haze covered the skies from nearby fireworks and the aurora danced overhead. Here are a few more photos from that epic night that made the top ten solar storms this cycle. I had barely made it out of town before I took these shots north of Bismarck, North Dakota. What a way to celebrate the 4th of July!

This is summer… Fireflies. Summer aurora. Fourth of July.

The call of summer is here. And I was fortunate to see one of my favorites together, fireflies under the northern lights lighting their own natural fireworks on the early hours of the 4th of July.

Summer Nights at the Lake.

📍Sweet Briar Creek Dam
📆 June 5, 2026

The late summer day faded into a warm glow over the water as the aurora greeted the departing sun. Reflections played out in the water below with lightning bugs adding to the magic. My favorite part was hearing the children camping excitedly telling their parents about seeing the aurora while taking pictures on their phones. Summer memories at the lake camping are some of the most cherished. 🏕️

There is also another incoming geomagnetic storm predicted to possibly arrive late on June 8th/June 9th at a G3/ G2 respectively. As always space weather is very uncertain, but we can always remain hopeful. Unfortunately for the Bismarck area we have a severe weather watch too for the same time. 😅

Catching the sun’s fleeting rays through soft spring petals. A welcomed grand finale to my Mother’s Day. and I spent these fleeting moments chasing the last sun of the day at McDowell Dam, outside Bismarck, ND.

The first and second 📸 are very close compositions. Not sure which is my favorite. Let me know in the comments if you have a favorite. 🌸

First time I heard trilling in the power lines during a substorm. It didn’t last very long and was kind of like a soft click followed by sequence of low trill tones and then repeated over and over. I wish my phone recording didn’t have so much background noise. I almost didn’t hear it, but I’m so amazed I did. The haze you see in the sky is lingering dust leftover from earlier strong winds. The aurora came out when there was lingering light from the sun left in the sky.

Two year anniversary of this amazing storm!!!

Now known as the Gannon Storm. I knew it was going to be epic so it was the first time I brought a large group of friends out on a chase, including my sons. After they went home I took a chance to see if I could get the northern lights on the North Dakota state capital grounds above the state library and Capitol building. It was near morning, which is one reason why you can see more of the purple/blues in the aurora. Definitely one of my favorite nights chasing and it happened to be Mother’s Day weekend as well.
