Failure is your friend.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned about creativity came from a teacher…11 years ago.

I remember showing him about ten canvases I’d made. He pointed out that I seemed to expect all ten to be successful and that was an unrealistic expectation.

Ooof. That stung a little. Then he offered an analogy that changed the way I thought about making art.

A baseball player who gets a hit three times out of ten is doing really well. You don’t step up to the plate expecting a home run every time.

And yet, as artists, we can work on ten paintings and somehow expect all ten to be great “home runs.”

That’s an impossible standard.

That conversation a decade ago changed everything for my art journey… it gave me permission to make bad art. And, strangely enough, giving myself permission to make bad art helped me make better art.

When every canvas doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, you can experiment. Try the strange color. Paint over something. Follow an idea that might not work. Stop protecting yourself from the possibility of getting it wrong.

Knowing you’re going to fail sometimes frees you to take creative risks. And those risks can open doors that perfectionism keeps shut.

Some ideas won’t work. Some paintings will be terrible. Some opportunities won’t lead anywhere. Some things you think will define your future will eventually matter very little.

Make them anyway. Failure is your friend.

(Also. I knew nothing about baseball before this analogy. So yay sports?!!!)

Nepal has held a piece of my heart for a long time. ❤️‍🩹

I’ve had the privilege of living there three different times, hiking through the Himalayas, drinking chai, and forming friendships with people I still consider like family. I’ve stood in the very mountains where so much devastation has taken place.

Seeing the destruction is heartbreaking. A country already so familiar with natural disaster is grieving again.

And I keep asking, what can I do??

My hope is that these little paintings hanging in our homes can become reminders to keep praying long after the news moves on.
