I didn’t make it as a top 10 finalist, but to be a consideration..out of over 17,000 submissions from around the world…is an honor that I am humbled to have received.
Wildlife photographers are driven by the desire to share the beauty, raw power, sad reality at times, and true wonder of nature that surrounds us; I look forward to continuing to do that in the future

A young elephant followed her mother into the trees of the wooded savanna as the sun slowly dipped in the horizon, signaling the end of another day in the savanna.
Elephants have long been one of my favorite animals..I had a jade elephant pendant as a little girl and have always been amazed by the family structure and memory that these magnificent creatures are so well known for, yet we still know so little about them

Mornings at start early..guests receive a knock on the door just before 5 am, letting them know it’s light enough to go outside for breakfast (the camp isn’t fenced) … guests are to be at their assigned jeeps by 5:25 am. As I drank my coffee and watched the light of the morning growing a little brighter, this vervet caught my attention. It swung from one branch to another, glancing occasionally at the people below. Despite the poor lighting, I grabbed my camera, hoping to get a photo of this monkey as a new day began. Vervet monkeys are highly intelligent and are found within 40 countries of Africa.

As the sun set in the wooded savanna, we watched the pack of wild dogs (painted dogs) quietly trot down the road, before crossing into the boundary of the Kruger National Park. I love that these two were inline with each other as I took the photo in the Greater Kruger National Park last Oct while out with and .od.wild

Initially, I believed this to be a Woodland Kingfisher… an inter-African migrant, arriving in the savanna regions of north-eastern South Africa, each October. It’s a beautiful bird with a stunning shade of blue and red upper beak. However, with its solid red bill, this is the “much rarer” Mangrove Kingfisher

One of 2 brothers that were resting after either a hunt or fight (the other had a fresh gash above one eye). You can see in this male’s face and ear the many battle scars it’s already earned. Life in the savanna is tough

I was fortunate enough to see ALL of the Big Five while in South Africa.
This African White Rhinoceros (the 2nd largest land mammal) had a couple of Oxpeckers tagging along with him..these birds have a symbiotic relationship with many animals throughout the region.

A very young giraffe calf (the umbilical cord was still attached) was exploring while its mother ate. Calves are generally isolated from the herd the first 3 weeks. It was such a joy to watch it run as it went to catch up with her
