The last time I drove through Big Sur it was a smoldering wasteland after the 2020 fire season. It turned almost the entire length of Big Sur all the way down to the water. I can still see the scars of dead forests and bald hills with no bushes yet... but it’s bouncing back! Let’s hope this year’s fire season gives Big Sur a break.

Pastel landscapes, boiling mud, turquoise water. Tucked away in a small basin in lassen national park is the most geothermally active area of the entire park.
But what’s with the name? Bumpass Hell is a pretty enticing name 😂 turns out a guy named Kendall Bumpass (I’d hate to imagine his nickname in highschool 😬) was exploring the area in the 1800s and the thin crust around the pool he was standing on collapsed and his entire leg was cooked in the boiling water below 🍗

The best advice I can give to someone, photographer or not, is to never leave sunset early.
I see it all the time when I photograph sunset. Hordes of people flock to the overlooks to watch the sun dip below the horizon. As soon as the last bit of sun goes away, they’re speed walking back to the car to get out before the traffic crush hits in the parking lot.
But they’re missing the best part! 5-10 minutes after the sun goes behind the horizon is when the cotton candy clouds happen!
All those people who left early missed it, stuck watching from their car in the parking lot traffic, or worse, they don’t even know it happened at all.
Photography is very much an art of knowing when to hustle and knowing when to stop and wait.
