Trigger warning: neonatal resuscitation
Exactly 1 year ago today I have the privilege of supporting this family and documenting this sweet boys journey earthside. After a long, grueling labor that mama handled with such grace and an unexpected cesarean, baby Jameson was finally born. To all of our surprise, he was limp and he didn’t cry. He wasn’t breathing and needed help. I ran behind the NICU transport team as they resuscitated him, took every picture I could get, just in case and I prayed. As an RN, a doula, and a birth photographer, I’ve seen a lot of babies be born. Very few traumatized me like this one did. Maybe because I was so close to this one, maybe because mama is one of my dearest friends, maybe because I felt like I had failed them..but I remember leaving the hospital in the wee hours of the morning, crying for them, and thinking to myself I didn’t think I could ever attend another birth. But then something unexpected happened. Mama expressed how thankful she was I was there. Told me me how important it was that I was there to explain things to them and support them. How much of a difference I made in their birth story. And so because of that, I did do it again, and again. And everytime I doula for or photograph a clients birth I cherish my “job”. Of I how I get the unique opportunity to be in such a sacred space at such a delicate time. I think of baby Jameson and his sweet family and remember the difference I was able to make and strive to be that support for every family. Today Baby Jameson turns 1. It’s been the greatest joy watching and documenting him grow into the sweet little guy he is. 🤍
