Great light isn’t always found. Sometimes, you have to create it. ✨

Photographing this quinceañera portrait session in Santa Barbara, California, I wanted the images to feel dramatic, elegant, and intentional—while still allowing the architecture and natural environment to become part of the story.

That’s where lighting control makes the difference.

Using MagMod ⁠ modifiers, I was able to shape and control the flash exactly where I wanted it—bringing attention to her while preserving the deep shadows, rich color, and dimensional atmosphere around her.

For this nighttime wedding portrait at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, I wanted the couple to feel almost completely isolated from the surroundings — while still showing the architecture and atmosphere of the venue.

Using MagMod lighting modifiers and off-camera flash, I shaped the light around the couple instead of simply lighting the entire scene. The result is a dramatic, cinematic portrait that feels completely different from what this location looks like during the day.

This is one of my favorite parts of wedding photography: seeing an ordinary space, controlling the light, and turning it into something unexpected.

You just need to know how to shape the light.

Caught this insane sky during an engagement session at Ventura Beach and knew exactly what I wanted to create. A little off-camera flash, my MagMod setup, some dramatic California clouds…and everything came together.

Beautiful natural light is one thing. Being able to shape it exactly how you want is another.

For this engagement session near Ventura Beach, I brought out the MagMod MagSphere to add just enough controlled light to my couple while still letting that gorgeous California coastline and dramatic sky do its thing.

That’s what I love about off-camera flash—I’m not trying to overpower the environment. I want to bring the couple forward, preserve the mood around them, and create an image that feels dimensional, cinematic, and intentional.

Photographing V&G at the Hyatt Regency Valencia was such a great experience. They were so kind, relaxed, hilarious, and just so much fun to be around. The kind of couple that makes you forget you’re technically there to work.

And I HAVE to mention their introduction video. 😂 Geoff Cox amazing writer, and it was seriously one of the funniest and best-written wedding intro videos I’ve seen. Creative, personal, completely unexpected—and absolutely them. I love when couples bring that much of their own personality into the celebration.

Visually, I wanted their gallery to have that same range.

Some moments were bright, natural and joyful. Others were intentionally more dramatic—deep shadows, controlled highlights, bold compositions and cinematic nighttime portraits.

For the more stylized images, MagMod is a huge part of how I work. Rather than simply lighting a couple so they’re visible, I use light to shape the photograph—directing your eye, separating the subjects from the environment and turning an ordinary location into something that feels completely different.

That final nighttime portrait is exactly why I love doing this. When the available light disappears, that doesn’t mean the photography has to stop. Sometimes that’s when the art really begins.

POV: The reception is over… but the artwork is just getting started.

Some of my favorite images happen after the timeline is complete. When the dance floor settles and the venue Hyatt Regency Valencia grows quiet, that’s when I get to slow down, shape the light, and create something unforgettable.

For this night portrait, I used MagMod lighting tools to sculpt the scene—adding depth, separation, and atmosphere while preserving the emotion of the moment. Every light is placed with intention. Every shadow has a purpose.

Not every wedding photo is found. Some are created.

These images didn’t happen by accident.

While beautiful natural light is always a gift, some of my favorite photographs are built from scratch—carefully shaping light, controlling shadows, and creating depth until the scene feels less like a photograph and more like a piece of cinema.

For this wedding, I used the MagMod lighting system to sculpt light exactly where I wanted it. Instead of flooding a room with flash, I was able to isolate my subjects, preserve the mood of the venue, and create images with intention, contrast, and emotion.

To me, lighting isn’t just technical.
