CM Photography - Freelancing in LA, California Creating Memories, One Snap at a Time! Now serving, Los Angeles, California Cole

Hi I'm Cole

I began taking pictures in 2007 and concentrated on capturing scenery but the decided to include people in my photography. I was very fortunate enough to go to Disney World 2 months ago ( Trip was in 2012 ), and met up with a friend who has two young daughters. I really enjoyed not only the trip but being able to photograph people and what better place to do that then in Disney World

with all the characters! My friend LOVED how professional my work looked ( I also enjoy fixing pictures and adding in my special effects touch to my work ) And suggested I become a freelance photographer. I've set up this Facebook site in the hopes of meeting others in Los Angeles, California who enjoy Photography or need someone to help capture their "Magical Moment" in life.

A Burbank Christmas:

Taken on Dec 10th 2025

Our 4th post of the Christmas season continues. Featuring a ton of Holiday cheer featuring the Christmas tree outside the AMC Burbank 16. That I have been wanting to capture since last year. Along with all the holiday decor the city has put up around the shopping centers as well. Also the Christmas tree outside the Burbank Town Center Mall. And close up shots of the Christmas tree outside City Hall. Last year I went to the lighting of the tree but couldn't get close enough shots due to the crowd. So I had to go back this year for better pictures of it.

A Vegas Christmas 2025

Our second post takes us out of state — a first for our Holiday month. This one is from when I went to Vegas in November to help my friend set up his client’s Christmas display. There were five of us total, and together we put up three full Christmas trees, added all the finishing touches, and built a little holiday village.

🎃 HallowScream XI. All October long, explore the chilling corners of LA’s past. Our 5th post for HallowScreams is: The Death of Actor Hervé Villechaize ( His House )

Tattoo from Fantasy Island
Address: 11537 Killion Street, Los Angeles, California

Hervé Jean-Pierre Villechaize April 23, 1943 – September 4, 1993) was a French actor. He is best known for his roles as the evil henchman Nick Nack in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun and as Mr. Roarke's assistant, Tattoo, on the American television series Fantasy Island that he played from 1977 to 1983. On Fantasy Island, his shout of "De plane! De plane!" became one of the show's signature phrases. He died by su***de in 1993

In the early afternoon of September 4, 1993, at his North Hollywood home, Villechaize, aged 50, is believed to have first fired a shot through the sliding-glass patio door to awaken his longtime girlfriend, Kathy Self, before shooting himself. Self found Villechaize in his backyard, and he was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of North Hollywood. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean off Point Fermin in San Pedro, Los Angeles.

Villechaize left a su***de note saying he was despondent over longtime health problems. He was suffering from chronic pain due to having oversized internal organs putting increasing pressure on his body. According to Self, Villechaize often slept in a kneeling position so he could breathe more easily. He also left an audio recording of the su***de that included his last words.

At the time of his death, Cartoon Network was in negotiations for him to co-star in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which was then in pre-production. Villechaize would have voiced Space Ghost's sidekick on the show.

🎃 HallowScream XI. All October long, explore the chilling corners of LA’s past. Our 4th post for HallowScreams is: The Murder of Bugsy Siegel ( His Beverly Mansion )

Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel (February 28, 1906 - June 20, 1947) was a Jewish-American mobster who was a driving force behind the development of the Las Vegas Strip. Siegel was influential within the Jewish Mob, along with his childhood friend and fellow gangster Meyer Lansky; the Italian-American Mafia; and the largely Italian-Jewish National Crime Syndicate. Described as "handsome" and "charismatic," Siegel became one of the first front-page celebrity gangsters

His Death:

On the night of June 20, 1947, Siegel sat on a sofa reading a copy of the Los Angeles Times, together with his associate Allen Smiley, in the living room of 810 North Linden Drive, the Beverly Hills mansion that he had leased for his girlfriend Virginia Hill. Also present in the residence were Hill's brother, Chick Hill; Chick's girlfriend; Jerry Mason; and Eung S. Lee, the residence's cook.

A little before 11:00 p.m., an unknown assailant fired into the living room through a window with a .30 caliber M1 carbine at a range of just fourteen feet from an archway in the driveway of the house, resting his weapon on a trellis just outside the window. The assailant could not be seen from the street due to an abundance of shrubbery. A total of nine rounds were fired, "four of which found their mark. One hit the bridge of [Siegel]'s nose and ripped out his left eye, a second entered his right cheek and exited at the back of his neck, and two hit him in the chest. According to Muir, who was "one of the first reporters on the scene, and who had spoken to Siegel earlier that day, the remaining shots "destroyed a white marble statue of Bacchus on a grand piano, and then lodged in the far wall. Muir also stated that she noticed Siegel's left eyeball lying on the ground, and "picked up the sliver of flesh from which his long eyelashes extended. Smiley's arm had been grazed by a bullet, but he was otherwise unharmed.

Clark Fogg, the senior forensic specialist in the Beverly Hills Police Department, concluded that Siegel was most likely slain by two shooters, claiming that "it would have been nearly impossible for just one gunman" to make such precise shots to his face because "the mobster's head would have turned upon impact from the first bullet. No one was ever charged with killing Siegel, and the murder remains officially unsolved.

One theory holds that Siegel's death was due to his excessive spending and possible theft of money from the mob. In 1946, a meeting had been held with the "board of directors" of the National Crime Syndicate in Havana, so that Luciano, who by that time had been exiled in Sicily, could attend. A contract on Siegel's life was the conclusion. According to Stacher, Lansky reluctantly agreed to the decision.

Bugsy Siegel crypt at Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Another theory claims that Siegel was shot to death preemptively by Mathew "Moose" Pandza, the lover of Sedway's wife Bee, who went to Pandza after learning that Siegel was threatening to kill her husband. Siegel apparently had grown increasingly resentful of the control Sedway was exerting over his finances and planned to do away with him. Former Philadelphia family boss Ralph Natale claimed that Carbo was responsible for killing Siegel, at the behest of Lansky. In 1987, former Dragna gopher Eddie Cannizzaro claimed that he killed Siegel under a contract issued by Lansky.

Siegel's death certificate states the cause of death as homicide and the immediate cause as "Cerebral Hemorrage due to Gunshot Wounds of the Head."

The day after Siegel's death, the Los Angeles Herald-Express carried a photograph on its front page from the morgue of Siegel's bare right foot with a toe tag. Although his murder occurred in Beverly Hills, his death thrust Las Vegas into the national spotlight as photographs of his lifeless body were published in newspapers throughout the country. The day after Siegel's murder, Sedway and his Las Vegas associates, David Berman and Gus Greenbaum, walked into the Flamingo and took over the resort's operation.

Address: 810 North Linden Drive in Beverly Hills

Bugsy Siegel's killer has never been identified, and the murder remains unsolved. He was shot and killed by an unknown assailant on June 20, 1947, while sitting in the living room of a Beverly Hills mansion. Theories suggest the murder was a result of his excessive spending or a dispute with the mob.

The murder: On the night of the murder, Siegel was shot multiple times through a window while reading in the living room.

The location: The crime occurred at 810 North Linden Drive, a mansion Siegel had leased for his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, in Beverly Hills.

Motive: Various theories exist, but the most prominent ones involve his alleged theft of money from the mob to fund his lifestyle or a separate issue involving a dispute with another individual.
Investigation: Despite numerous theories and suspects, no one was ever charged with the killing, and the case remains open

🎃 HallowScream XI. All October long, explore the chilling corners of LA’s past. Our 3rd post for HallowScreams is: The Death of Actor Phil Hartman.

Address: 5065 Encino Avenue in Encino, California

On May 27, 1998, Hartman's wife, Brynn, visited the Italian restaurant Buca di Beppo in Encino, California, with producer and writer Christine Zander, who said she was "in a good frame of mind"; they had drinks. After returning home, Brynn had a "heated" argument with Hartman, after which he went to bed. She entered his bedroom some time before 3:00 a.m. PDT on May 28, 1998, and, as he slept, she fatally shot him once between the eyes, once in the throat and once in the upper chest with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson Model 15 revolver. Hartman was 49 years old. Brynn was taking Zoloft, had been drinking alcohol, and had recently used co***ne.

Brynn then drove to the home of her friend Ron Douglas and confessed to the killing but he did not believe her. They drove back to the house in separate cars and she called another friend and confessed a second time. Upon seeing Hartman's body, Douglas called 9-1-1 at 6:20 a.m. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrived and escorted Douglas and the Hartmans' two children from the premises, by which time Brynn had locked herself in the bedroom. Shortly afterward, she shot and killed herself with a .38-caliber Charter Arms Undercover revolver.

The LAPD stated Hartman's death was caused by "domestic discord" between the couple. A neighbor of the Hartmans told a CNN reporter that the couple had marital problems. Yet actor Steve Guttenberg said they had been "a very happy couple and they always had the appearance of being well-balanced".

Brynn's brother, Gregory Omdahl, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 1999 against both Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zoloft, and his sister's psychiatrist, Arthur Sorosky, who had provided samples of the antidepressant to Brynn. Pfizer later settled the lawsuit without an admission of any wrongdoing.[61] Hartman's friend and former SNL colleague Jon Lovitz has accused Hartman's NewsRadio co-star Andy Dick of reintroducing Brynn to co***ne, causing her to relapse and suffer a nervous breakdown. Dick claimed to have known nothing of her condition. Lovitz later said he no longer blamed Dick for Hartman's murder but in 2006, Lovitz claimed Dick had approached him at a restaurant and said, "I put the Phil Hartman hex on you. You're the next one to die." Lovitz then had him ejected from the restaurant. The following year at the Laugh Factory comedy club in Los Angeles, Lovitz and Dick had another argument with Lovitz slamming Dick's head into the bar.[64] Dick asserted he was not at fault in relation to Hartman's death.

Brynn's sister Katharine Omdahl and brother-in-law Mike Wright raised the two Hartman children. Hartman's will stipulated each child would inherit money over several years after turning 25. The total value of Hartman's estate was estimated at $1.23 million. In accordance with their wishes, both Hartman's and Brynn's bodies were cremated by Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, Glendale, California, and their ashes were scattered over Santa Catalina Island's Emerald Bay. A cenotaph with Hartman's and Brynn's names was installed at a cemetery in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where Brynn was born.

Response and legacy
NBC executive Don Ohlmeyer stated that Hartman "was blessed with a tremendous gift for creating characters who made people laugh. Everyone who had the pleasure of working with Phil knows that he was a man of tremendous warmth, a true professional and a loyal friend." Guttenberg expressed shock at Hartman's death and Steve Martin said he was "a deeply funny and very happy person".[58] Matt Groening called him "a master" and director Joe Dante said "He was one of those guys who was a dream to work with. I don't know anybody who didn't like him." Dan Snierson of Entertainment Weekly concluded that Hartman was "the last person you'd expect to read about in lurid headlines in your morning paper" and "a decidedly regular guy, beloved by everyone he worked with". In 2007, Entertainment Weekly ranked Hartman the 87th greatest television icon of all time, and Maxim named him the top Saturday Night Live performer of all time.

On the day of Hartman's death, rehearsals for The Simpsons and that night's performance by The Groundlings were canceled. The season five premiere episode of NewsRadio, "Bill Moves On" (aired September 23, the day before what would have been his 50th birthday) finds Hartman's character, Bill McNeal, has died of a heart attack, while the other characters reminisce about his life. Lovitz joined the show in his place beginning with the next episode. An episode that ended a season of 3rd Rock from the Sun, where Hartman played a flamboyant recurring character who ends up kidnapping Harry was scrapped due to it being a cliffhanger that would have been resolved in the subsequent season premiere, as well as to show respect for Hartman's death. A special episode of Saturday Night Live commemorating Hartman's work on the show aired on June 13, 1998, which ended with one of Hartman's performances showing a widow reflecting on her deceased husband played by Hartman. Rather than substituting another voice actor, the writers of The Simpsons retired Hartman's characters. His final appearance in the tenth season episode "Bart the Mother" is dedicated to him. Small Soldiers was dedicated to Hartman, being his final film to be released in movie theatres.

Hartman was preparing to voice Zapp Brannigan, a character written specifically for him on Groening's second animated series Futurama, at the time of his death. Even though the role was specifically made for him, Hartman still insisted on trying out for the role. About a week before his death, he auditioned for Groening and Futurama executive producer David X. Cohen. Groening wrote that Hartman "blew us away with his performances". After Hartman's death, Billy West took over the role. Though Cohen credits West with using his own take on the character,West later said that he purposely tweaked Zapp's voice to better match Hartman's intended portrayal.Hartman was planning to appear with Lovitz in the indie film The Day of Swine and Roses, scheduled to begin production in August 1998.

In 2002, Laugh.com and Hartman's brother John published the album Flat TV, a selection of comedy sketches recorded by Hartman in the 1970s, which had been kept in storage. John Hartman commented: "I'm putting this out there because I'm dedicating my life to fulfilling his dreams. This [album] is my brother doing what he loved." Flat TV was optioned for an animated adaptation by Michael "Ffish" Hemschoot's animation company Worker Studio in 2013.The deal came about after Michael T. Scott, a partner in the company, posted online a handwritten letter he had received from Hartman in 1997, leading to a correspondence between Scott and Paul Hartmann.

A campaign was started on Facebook by Alex Stevens in 2007, and endorsed by Hartman's brother Paul, to have Phil inducted to Canada's Walk of Fame. Among the campaign's numerous publicity events, Ben Miner of the Sirius XM Radio channel Laugh Attack dedicated the month of April 2012 to Hartman. The campaign ended in success and Hartman was inducted on September 22, 2012, to the Walk of Fame, with Paul accepting the award on his late brother's behalf. Hartman was also awarded the Cineplex Legends Award. In June 2013, it was announced that Hartman would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was unveiled on August 26, 2014. Additionally, a special prize at the Canadian Comedy Awards was named for Hartman. Beginning with the 13th Canadian Comedy Awards in 2012, the Phil Hartman Award was awarded to "an individual who helps to better the Canadian comedy community". In 2015, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Hartman as one of the ten greatest Saturday Night Live cast members throughout the show's forty-year history, coming in seventh on its list of all 141 members.

🎃 HallowScream XI. All October long, explore the chilling corners of LA’s past. Our 2nd post for HallowScreams is: The Death of Actor Johnny Lewis ( Sons of Anarchy ).

On September 26, 2012, Lewis, then 28, murdered his 81-year-old landlady, Catherine Davis, in the home. After killing Davis and her cat, Lewis either fell or jumped to his death from a balcony or the roof.

The house: Known as the "Writers' Villa," the house was used as temporary lodging for people in the entertainment industry.

Cause of death: The cause of death for Davis was determined to be blunt-force trauma and manual strangulation. Lewis' death was ruled accidental after he fell about 15 feet from a terrace.

Toxicology report: While initial speculation suggested Lewis was under the influence of drugs, a later autopsy found no traces of drugs or alcohol in his system.

Speculation on behavior: Some close to Lewis believe a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident may have contributed to his uncharacteristic and violent behavior.

Actor Johnny Lewis helped promote Scientology’s controversial drug rehab program before a downward spiral led him to jail, court-ordered rehab elsewhere, the murder of his landlady and possible su***de, documents show.

Lewis publicly promoted the Church of Scientology’s drug program, Narconon, in 2004, saying his mom used Narconon materials to teach him to avoid drugs.

A photo of Lewis at a Narconon event was posted on the program’s website until late Thursday. Lewis’ parents are active members of the controversial church, and his father co-wrote a movie with founder L. Ron Hubbard, according to IMDB.

The dad also appears in a 2011 YouTube video lecturing about ways to deal with crisis using Hubbard’s teachings.

Lewis spent two seasons playing Kip (Half Sack) Epps on the FX motorcycle-gang drama “Sons of Anarchy,” but his life had steadily unraveled over the past 10 months as he struggled with drug and mental-health issues, according to court documents and Los Angeles probation officers.

The former paramour of singer Katy Perry had been arrested three times in 2012 and was only five days out of jail before the bizarre and violent rampage in Los Angeles on Wednesday that left him and his 81-year-old landlady, Catherine Davis, dead.

Catherine Davis was bludgeoned to death by Lewis, police said.

Investigators were probing whether Lewis had been on a popular new synthetic drug called Smiles, the Daily News reported Thursday.

Lewis was renting a room from Davis, who owned a sprawling hillside home that she advertised as a “villa” for actors and writers.

On Wednesday morning, the troubled actor allegedly went berserk in Davis’ living quarters, ransacking furniture and bludgeoning the elderly woman to death, police said.

She was also strangled and her cat dismembered, sources said.

Lewis then hopped an external privacy wall and attacked a house painter next door, reportedly using a 2-by-4 board and a paint roller, police said.

The house’s owner, Daniel Blackburn, rushed to the painter’s aid and was badly beaten.

He had deep red bruising around his eyes Thursday when he told The News he also sustained a chipped tooth in the melee.

Lewis climbed back over the wall as multiple neighbors called for help, traveled across Davis’ property again and either fell or jumped to his death in her driveway.
The cause of death will be declared after toxicology results come in, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told The News.

Probation officials had warned Lewis’ behavior was growing increasingly erratic in recent months, even as the actor continued to land movie roles.

“This officer is very concerned for the well being of not only the community but that of the defendant. It is apparent to this officer that the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing,” a probation officer wrote in recent report.

Family and friends had made repeated attempts to get help for Lewis to address “drug abuse and mental illness,” sources told the Los Angeles Times.

Address: 3605 Lowry Road in Los Feliz, Los Angeles.

A blood splatter seen in the driveway of a home in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles on Thursday, a day after the body of “Sons of Anarchy” actor Johnny Lewis, 28, was found there.
“Johnny was the bright star of our lives. We always looked up to him, and now I guess we’ll have to look up a little higher,” dad Michael Lewis, 62, told The News as his voice cracked with emotion.

He declined to discuss the circumstances of his son’s death. “That’s all I can tell you,” he said.

Davis was kind and generous, said neighbors who lived in her affluent Los Feliz community.

“Catherine was very friendly and lively and fun,” recalled Barbara Angvire, her neighbor since the 1960s. “My son used to play with her daughter Margaret. I was so shocked to hear this happened. We’ve lived here since the 1960s. I feel so bad for her daughter.”

It's that time once again. The whole month of Oct.

🎃 HallowScream XI. All October long, explore the chilling corners of LA’s past. We start off our HallowScreams month with: Murder at The Silent Movie Theater:

In 1997, the owner of Los Angeles' Silent Movie Theatre ( Now known as BRAIN DEAD STUDIOS ), Laurence Austin, was murdered by a hitman hired by his business partner and lover, James Van Sickle. The hitman, Christian Rodriguez, also shot and wounded a young employee to make the killing look like a robbery.

An update to The Silent Movie Theater saga - Brain Dead ...The Silent Movie Theatre became Brain Dead Studios in October 2020. After a brief period as Fairfax Cinema following the closure of Cinefamily, the streetwear company Brain Dead took over the lease in 2020, rebranding the historic venue as Brain Dead Studios.

Address: 611 N Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036

January 17, 1997, the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles was celebrating its sixth anniversary when the festive vibe was shattered by gunshots.

Detectives found that the establishment's owner, Lawrence Austin, 74, had been fatally shot. Mary Giles, 19, a concessions clerk, was also shot but was alive. She was rushed to the hospital.

Austin had “three distinct bullet wounds, including one in the head,” Los Angeles Police Department Detective John Miller told Real Murders of Los Angeles, debuting October 6 at 9/8c on Oxygen.

Robbery-Gone-Wrong Initially Suspected
A bag of blood-spattered cash, about $500, was near Austin’s body. “We were open to the possibility that it was a robbery gone bad,” said LAPD Detective Alan Hamilton.

The gunman ran through the crowded theater and out the back alley, according to witnesses. “It’s almost as though this individual wanted to be seen,” added Hamilton.

As a crime scene team processed the theater, projectionist James Van Sickle offered his assistance. Investigators learned that the theater had been founded in the 1940s and was the only one in the U.S. devoted solely to silent films.

The business had shuttered for a number of years. In 1991, Austin, who'd fallen in love with the theater as a kid in high school, took it over. “He just breathed new life into it,” said Los Angeles crime historian Joan Renner.

Austin was “the high priest of silent cinema,” his friend Chris Perkins told Real Murders of Los Angeles.

On January 18, detectives hoped to interview Giles, who may have been the only person to see the shooter. Lucky for her and the case, the bullet entered her chest and went to her shoulder without hitting vital organs.

Giles recalled that a guy came in and asked to speak with the manager. When Austin stepped forward, the perpetrator pulled a gun and demanded cash. Austin immediately obliged but was shot anyway. Then Giles was shot.

Giles had a clear recollection of what this individual looked like, said Hamilton. She didn’t recognize him, and he was Hispanic.

Detectives were puzzled as to why the gunman opened fire when he was given no resistance. Was it really a robbery? Or a targeted attack?

On January 20, detectives spoke with Austin’s nephew. He reiterated that the theater enabled “him to be part of the legacy of Hollywood,” said Miller.

Like the movies, parts of Austin’s life turned out to be make-believe. “Larry often told people that his dad and his uncle were silent film actors and his mother was a seamstress for the great director Cecil B. DeMille,” said Renner. “None of that was true.”

Had Austin crossed someone with his lies? Detectives dug deeper. “We determined that he actually served time for embezzlement at a company that he worked at years prior to his ownership of the theater,” said Hamilton.

Had Austin embezzled money to cover the costs of his beloved business? Investigators considered the possibility.

At the same time, the case caught the attention of America’s Most Wanted. The show interviewed detectives as well as Van Sickle.

The true-crime show also provided a sketch artist to create a drawing of the shooter. The picture was released to the media, while the LAPD offered a $25,000 reward.

Suspicion Falls on Business Partner James Van Sickle
Investigators scrutinized Austin’s business accounts. “The first thing we did was get search warrants on Larry Austin’s accounts to see what was happening,” said LAPD Detective Dave Harned, who worked in the financial crimes division in 1997.

Silent Movie Theatre assets, including cash, property and original prints and films, were worth about $3.5 million.

As they learned this, investigators also saw that money was being diverted from one of Austin's accounts. They had the bank put a freeze on it. It turned out that Van Sickle’s name was also on the account.

Van Sickle, then 34, said that he and Austin were business partners, a fact he hadn’t shared earlier. He maintained that the theater was still open and he needed money to run it. He also had Austin’s upcoming memorial to pay for, said detectives.

Van Sickle revealed that he and Austin had been lovers. “Austin was not openly gay,” said Miller. When their romantic relationship ended, the men became business partners.

In February 1997, investigators got a tip from an informant who said that 19-year-old Christian Rodriguez admitted to the theater shootings. He had a rap sheet but no violent crimes. So what was his motive?

James Van Sickle Tied to Alleged Gunman Christian Rodriguez
Detectives discovered that Rodriguez and Van Sickle had worked together, and raced to track down Rodriguez.

At the same time, they found that Van Sickle “had a sordid criminal past,” Hamilton said. He served time for selling drugs and was booked for attempted murder. The attempted murder charge was dropped when the victim failed to show up in court.

Van Sickle’s actions had a pattern, according to Hamilton. “He would establish a relationship with an older male and these relationships typically ended... with a violent encounter,” he said.

To protect their privacy, the victims may have decided not to press charges. “This is how Van Sickle could victimize people in their own community and get away with it,” said Renner.

Investigators considered that Van Sickle had his eye on Austin’s $3.5 million. They believed he hired Rodriguez, who was young and cash-strapped, to be his trigger man.

James Van Sickle's Confession is Caught on Tape
Authorities needed a confession from Van Sickle to tie him to the crime. Detectives caught a break from a confidential informant who’d seen Van Sickle on America’s Most Wanted. He claimed Van Sickle approached him months earlier about killing Austin.

At the time, the informant gave the proposition a hard pass. But now he was ready to turn on Van Sickle for the reward money, according to detectives.

Investigators recruited the informant to get Van Sickle’s taped confession. Working with detectives, the source called Van Sickle and said he read about the murder and wanted $10,000. Otherwise, he’d go to the police.

Detectives had unfrozen Van Sickle’s account. The suspect went to the bank and withdrew $10,000, and then met with the informant at an underground garage. Van Sickle was being tailed by police the whole time. He was recorded admitting that he hired a hitman to kill Austin and Giles.

James Van Sickle and Christian Rodriguez are Arrested
In March 1997, Van Sickle was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of Austin. A day later, Rodriguez was taken into custody. Rodriguez told police Van Sickle hired him because he had no record and no one would suspect him.

Rodriguez was to be paid $25,000. In a chilling admission, he said he’d get an extra $5,000 for shooting Giles to make it look like a robbery.

Giles gave key testimony at the trial. In May 1999, Van Sickle and Rodriguez were convicted and sentenced to life without parole. The pair were also convicted of the attempted murder of Giles, in addition to attempted robbery and commercial burglary.
