Lauren & Eddie’s portrait session at Mt. Chocorua Lake was everything an engagement session should be. Lots of chemistry, joy, and silliness punctuated by quiet moments of intimacy. I’m over the moon that they invited me to capture their wedding in Maine in October! 💍💞🤙

When it comes to Wedding Photography, it’s important to hire a professional with vast experience and knowledge of the job.

In the past decade and a half I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and fulfilled every commitment I made. That’s a track record I earned through hard work and dedication, while juggling an endless chain of side jobs and paying off cumbersome student loans. I’m proud of all the hard work I’ve done, in spite of the many challenges that recent years have posed for creative small businesses across the board. I am incredibly thankful for all the work that I get. That said, Google ads, doesn’t seem to be pulling much weight for me under a budget I can sustain for advertising. Wedding bookings are slim this year, so this is the part where I get humble and just ask everybody who knows me, loves me, and enjoys my photos to recommend me when you can. Word-of-mouth has been the most valuable source of income for me since I got started back in 2011. As always, thanks a million for following my life-journey as a photographer. Seriously guys, you are the best. 🫶

While exploring Montana we were lucky to witness glimpses of the Elk migration in the high plains outside of Ennis. Elk leave Yellowstone National Park by the thousands every winter to evade wolves and migrate back the in the springtime when food is abundant.

During a rainy morning stroll with Henry down to our wildlife pond a mature Barred Owl peeked back at us from its well camouflaged perch, most likely seeking an early-spring amphibian snack. Photo 3 in the series demonstrates the Barred Owl’s uncanny ability to blend into its surroundings, acting as a lethal ghost of the forest even by the light of day. 🦉

As sunlight and steam dance and twist they reveal glimpses of the vibrant colors and rich textures of Yellowstone National Park’s geothermal landscapes. I’m utterly captivated by the dance. I wander along the empty winter boardwalks, camera clutched tightly in hand, meandering amongst the mudpots, fumaroles (steam vents), travertine terraces, hot springs and geysers. I’m transported into another world—a timeless world, totally awestruck by the wonders of nature.

The eastern sagebrush grasslands of Montana is where the Pronghorn play. “Known for reaching speeds of 60 mph, they are the second fastest land animal. Their horns, which have a characteristic prong, are made of keratin and shed annually.”

Yesterday around 7 PM I had a rare close encounter with a Northern Saw-Whet Owl that was perched on the canoe rack under our deck. This sighting was filmed outside our home in Bridgton, Maine. The lighting in the video is ambient light from a fixed wall light next to the side entrance of our house. It landed 6 feet from our doorway. I’m not sure how long it was perched there before I noticed it, but I was sitting on a bench 15 feet away for several minutes before it even caught my eye.

My wife Kristen later made a great point, which is that we feed the chickadees from the deck above that area. The seeds fall down and mice come in to get them. The owl was undoubtedly there looking for a snack.

Later in the evening I took our dog Henry out to do his business. Thinking ahead, I left all the exterior lights off before I slowly opened the door, and to my pleasant surprise the owl was back, perched on the opposite arm of the canoe rack. It flew immediately upon hearing Henry’s collar bell and glided softly into the moonlit forest. I was unable to get another video nor did I try. We intend to keep the lights off down there as much as possible in the evenings for a while now that we know it is feeding there.

As for the canoe on that rack, it’s always been the owl’s canoe. It was my late Grandpa Frank Vogt’s kevlar canoe. He taught me how to paddle it. He taught me to respect and be mindful of nature. It’s wonderful to know that he’s still with me in a way. 🛶🦉
