Days 7-17 of Ecuador: Mindo and Refugio Paz de Las Aves

We were unable to make it to the Amazonian region of Ecuador due to a landslide that blocked our path. We extended our stay in Mindo and were able to get a lot of special birds and near endemics. Its always exciting going somewhere new and having nearly every bird be a lifer.

This Talamanca Hummingbird was really showing off his iridescence in the rain while trying to fight off rivals from his feeder.

This is a newer species, being split in 2017 from Magnificent Hummingbird into Rivoli’s and Talamanca Hummingbird.

Birds hear much differently than humans. When we hear warblers calling on the breeding grounds, we perceive a beautiful song. To a bird there are notes within notes that we cannot hear at full speed.

I actually filmed this by accident. I was videoing hummingbirds at a high fps and forgot to change it back to normal before I saw this Nightingale Wren while hiking in Costa Rica. Happy accidents.
