Winter at Alton Bay

The Alton Bay Seaplane Base and Ice Runway, officially known as B18, is the only FAA-designated ice runway in the lower 48 states. It is located on Lake Winnipesaukee and is a public-use seaplane base in the summer and a plowed ice runway in the winter. The base is owned, operated, and managed by the State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Aeronautics. The ice runway is cleared and marked, with carefully measured ice depths to ensure safety. It typically opens in late December or early January, depending on winter conditions, and remains usable until early spring. The runway is closed when snow cover, thawing, or unsafe ice renders it unusable.
