One of my best friends for the last 15 years, Christy Burgess, is being awarded the Indiana Governor's Arts Award, tomorrow. The award is "to recognize outstanding achievement and contributions to arts and creativity in Indiana, the Office of the Governor with the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) present the Governor’s Arts Awards, the highest honor the state gives in the arts. These awards honor those who maximize their roles as innovators, supporters and advocates to grow arts and creativity on the state or national level."
To say I am proud of her is an understatement. This woman pours her whole heart and soul into the children she teaches and the program that SHE created and developed over the last two decades. Ask anyone in South Bend (or in the Shakespeare world) about the best youth Shakespeare programs in the community (or country for that matter) and Christy's work will always be mentioned. Beyond what she teaches, I am so proud of how she loves. Whether it's staying late to work on a show, driving students to and from school, big hugs on hard days, or advocating for the children of our community -- she is ALWAYS there.
This award is just little way to show thanks for all of her work and commitment. I, personally, am counting down the days until my own daughter can join the ranks of the Robinson Shakespeare Company!
Please, join me in sharing, posting, and loving on this incredible human and valuable member of the South Bend community. I love that she's my best friend.
