Moonset at St. Helena

A different look at the moon over St. Helena Island Lighthouse. The previous shot I shared was the rising moon — this time it’s the setting moon from August, dropping behind the lighthouse over the Straits of Mackinac.
And if you look closely, there’s a little photobomber hiding in the boathouse. 👀

Milky Way Over Tahquamenon

The summer Milky Way rising above Upper Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
I’ve photographed these falls plenty of times, but this was a view I’d had in mind for years. A blue-hour foreground combined with a tracked Milky Way sky finally brought the idea together.
Two of my favorite things to photograph in Michigan, all in one frame.

Tawas Point in Infrared

A different view of Tawas Point Lighthouse along the Lake Huron shoreline.
Infrared transforms an ordinary summer afternoon—the foliage turns nearly white, the sky goes dark, and suddenly a familiar Michigan lighthouse takes on an entirely different mood.
Even the clouds decided to cooperate for this one.

Under the Milky Way — D.H. Day Barn

One of Michigan’s most recognizable barns beneath one of my favorite summer skies.
The Milky Way rises behind the historic D.H. Day Barn in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, with the galactic core stretching almost directly above the roofline.
This one had been on my photography list for quite a while. Sometimes a location works out about as well as you pictured it.

The August Moonrise Over Wawatam

A summer moonrise over Wawatam Lighthouse in St. Ignace, Michigan.

I had this alignment planned ahead of time, but there’s still something pretty satisfying about watching the moon rise exactly where you hoped it would. For a few moments, it hovered almost perfectly above the lighthouse.

Sometimes the planning actually works. 🌕

Perseids Over Point Iroquois

One night. A lot of planning. And quite a few hours behind the camera.
The Perseid meteor shower streaks across the Milky Way above Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Andromeda even makes an appearance off to the right.

This is a composite built from meteors captured throughout the night, combined with my tracked Milky Way panorama and blue-hour foreground.

Definitely one of my favorite images from this summer.

Sturgeon Point in Infrared

A different look at Sturgeon Point Lighthouse along the Lake Huron shoreline. The infrared view turns the summer foliage almost white, giving the scene a look that falls somewhere between summer and winter.

One of my favorite things about infrared photography is seeing a familiar Michigan landscape transformed into something completely different.

Blood Moon Over Tahquamenon
From full moon to totality — the progression of the August lunar eclipse over Michigan’s Tahquamenon Falls.
I photographed the stages of the eclipse throughout the night, then brought them together with a blue-hour view of the falls to show the story of the eclipse in a single frame.
Definitely one of those nights that was worth losing some sleep for. 🌕🌑🌕

A Different Look at the Moon

While everyone is sharing some incredible lunar eclipse images today, mine are still waiting to be edited. 😄 So here's a different view of our closest neighbor in the meantime. This was taken last night before the Lunar Eclipse started.

This "Mineral Moon" uses enhanced color to reveal subtle differences in the lunar surface that are normally difficult to see, turning the familiar full moon into something a little less familiar.

The eclipse photos will be coming soon...

Where the River Meets the Stars

Deep in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Milky Way rises above the Tahquamenon River, framed by the forest and a quiet footbridge below.

A combination of two of my favorite things to photograph—the wild landscapes of the UP and the night sky above them.
