Perseids Over Point Iroquois

One night. A lot of planning. And quite a few hours behind the camera.
The Perseid meteor shower streaks across the Milky Way above Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Andromeda even makes an appearance off to the right.

This is a composite built from meteors captured throughout the night, combined with my tracked Milky Way panorama and blue-hour foreground.

Definitely one of my favorite images from this summer.

Sturgeon Point in Infrared

A different look at Sturgeon Point Lighthouse along the Lake Huron shoreline. The infrared view turns the summer foliage almost white, giving the scene a look that falls somewhere between summer and winter.

One of my favorite things about infrared photography is seeing a familiar Michigan landscape transformed into something completely different.

Blood Moon Over Tahquamenon
From full moon to totality — the progression of the August lunar eclipse over Michigan’s Tahquamenon Falls.
I photographed the stages of the eclipse throughout the night, then brought them together with a blue-hour view of the falls to show the story of the eclipse in a single frame.
Definitely one of those nights that was worth losing some sleep for. 🌕🌑🌕

A Different Look at the Moon

While everyone is sharing some incredible lunar eclipse images today, mine are still waiting to be edited. 😄 So here's a different view of our closest neighbor in the meantime. This was taken last night before the Lunar Eclipse started.

This "Mineral Moon" uses enhanced color to reveal subtle differences in the lunar surface that are normally difficult to see, turning the familiar full moon into something a little less familiar.

The eclipse photos will be coming soon...

Where the River Meets the Stars

Deep in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Milky Way rises above the Tahquamenon River, framed by the forest and a quiet footbridge below.

A combination of two of my favorite things to photograph—the wild landscapes of the UP and the night sky above them.

Lines to the Light

The blue railings lead the way to the Cheboygan Crib Rear Light, while a sweeping summer sky adds a little drama overhead.

One of those compositions where the surroundings do almost as much work as the lighthouse itself.

Happy National Lighthouse Day! Lighthouses have always been one of my favorite subjects to photograph. Here is a very small sampling of some of my favorites. How many of these do you recognize, or have you visited?

A different view from Crisp Point.

Looking down the Lake Superior shoreline from the top of Crisp Point Lighthouse. Photographed in infrared, the familiar summer landscape takes on an almost otherworldly look as the shoreline winds its way into the distance.

A moonrise worth waiting for.

Clouds briefly draped across the rising full moon as it climbed above the Wawatam Lighthouse in St. Ignace. The moment only lasted a minute or two before the moon cleared the clouds and continued its climb over northern Michigan.

Sometimes the unexpected makes the photograph.

Detroit disappears into the fog.

Some mornings the skyline barely shows itself. Thick fog wrapped the Renaissance Center, turning one of Michigan's most recognizable buildings into little more than glowing silhouettes.
