ARTIST BIOGRAPHY STATEMENT FOR LARRY BRAUN I am a fine art photographer living in Benton, Missouri. The focus of my work is done outdoors in small towns, state parks, and historic districts of Missouri. Using my own digital work flow, I add a texture to my photographic images. For me this creates my own unique artistic interpretation of my subject, which some describe as adding a 'painterly feel' to the images. My art has been in multiple exhibitions, including Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff, the transition space of the Crisp Museum, the Southeast Missouri Art Council and the Sikeston Depot Museum. My art work has also been featured in the Southeast Missourian, Missouri Life, and the magazine, The Best Years. My photographs have been used on book covers, phonebook covers and by online magazines. I have also created small decorative 'bird houses' which feature my photographs of historic homes and well known structures in miniature. I photograph all four sides of the structure and then reduce the image to fit my template for the bird houses.

My caption is "Mystical Perceptions of the Ordinary". I look at things that most people would pass by without a second thought, and find simple beauty in ordinary scenes. Incredible places like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Red Rock all have stunning scene, which have inspired many for decades. But my focus is on the hidden, the subtle, and the ordinary. Perhaps since I myself am somewhat ordinary, I find satisfaction in showing how the ordinary has hidden beauty that goes unnoticed. My method of photography is to explore my surroundings. making mental notes of my observations, then convert these observations into images with my camera. I explore my surroundings by hiking through the national forests, state parks and nature areas, or just by riding around the countryside finding scenes that I find interesting. I like to explore scenes with barns, fences, rock formations, fog and flowers, just to name a few. Its how I see these subjects linked together that I believe makes a scene interesting. I also employ a relatively new photography method called High Dynamic Range (HDR). This method uses multiple images taken at different exposures to create an evenly balanced image with lots of depth. At the bottom of the hill, a gathering place to tell how it is, to tell how it was, to tell what we want, to tell what we got. I can hear these words wobbling off the walls from decades of debates.

Frohna at Sunset

Main Street
Frohna Missouri

Photo Taken on May 3, 2020

Lawn chairs sit empty on the platform, waiting for usage. Lawn chair want sitters, like dogs want something to sniff, like cats want something that crawls, like squirrels want something to crack. The sun waits for nothing, its dropping and will soon be gone. Meanwhile the trees radiate in the late evening light. They do this every night the sun is shinning, the black asphalt too wishes to shine.

Gravel Road

Photo taken on May 3, 2020

Water disappears, then reappears, rippling down stream. One lane gravel road points to the concrete slabs that crosses the stream providing a passage way to the other side. Where the crops are growing, where the neighbor lives, where church will be starting in a few, where the store lies. 50 pounds of flour, 5 pounds of sugar, and a bottle of Beechams Pills.

A Barn Then a House
Gravel Road
Perry County Missouri

Photo taken on May 3, 2020

Along a curve in the gravel road, the sun brightens the hillside, A white barn with a red silo, that draws the eye in for the start of a visual journey through the barn past the lone tree in the green pasture and to the double gabled white house with a red chimney in between. Spring is revealed by the bright yellow flowers distributed along the side of the road. A lone cow sits calmly at the corner of the fence. Waiting for the grass to grow taller.

Recently I have focused my work on small towns. Small towns are going through a major transition, as the factories have all left, and agriculture has become more mechanized, and all the shops and stores that supported theses people have lost business. In short small towns in America are disappearing. In many cases all thats left is a skeleton of structures which are decaying and disappearing fast. My work can be purchased at https://larry-braun.pixels.com

Thanks for the special pictures!
I love your work; thanks so much for the pics of Bloomfield, my hometown for 74 years.
Do you take suggestions for places to photograph?
Perkins isn't the only place with a shoe tree. There's one on the Murray State campus, too.
Here was my first exposure to the Perkins shoe tree.
Larry, you posted a photo of the Perkins shoe tree. If you had looked closely, you might have noticed some red tags holding the shoes to the pole. They were placed there by some Steinhoffs in 2010.
Larry you said you had two pics of Eisleben i know i ordered one but i was wondering if the other might be Leslie Krirlete from Colombia MO she is my daughter whom i am getting the print for if this is not her then disregard my note but i just wanted to make sure
Larry i would like a 11x14 print of the one of Eislebeb Lutheran Church cemetary in front my daughter likes this as we have many friends and relatives buried there my phone is 264-4655 and my address is 411 Third St East Scott City MO just let me know
Your beautiful photography makes me want to visit every single place you've photographed—even places I usually have no interest in!
Your photos are amazing! Do you have any taken in / around Chaffee?
I don’t know how long you have been taking photos but I have been searching for a photo of my grandparents house in Harviell for years. It was directly across from the First Methodist Church which is now used as a community center but still identifiable by the steeple. The Bolin house burned during one of the seasonal floods. Not only was it an interesting house but it was originally built by a doctor that strongly believed in the medicinal and curative power of sassafras. The entire home was built out of sassafras lumber from the foundation beams to the lap siding. My father supplied much of the photos and data for the Harviell Book published several years ago but no photos of his home place. If you should ever come across any I would surely appreciate a shout!
Larry’s work is phenomenal. Makes my day. His photographs are truly works of art. I will purchase one soon; just can’t decide ❤️
