In the early hours of May 8, 2024, a tornado rated as F-2 hit the Lake Hamilton area of Hot Springs, Arkansas. The tornado caused extensive damage to many homes and condos in the area. Its path spanned over 12 miles, with peak winds reaching 120 M.P.H. Fortunately, there were no reports of fatalities or significant injuries. However, the tornado damaged more than 100 structures on Long Island. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was present on the ground for 26 minutes and grew to a maximum width of 600 feet.

Exactly one year ago, a powerful tornado swept through WLR, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The scale of the damage caused by the natural disaster was immense, and it left many residents reeling from the loss of their homes and belongings.

Since then, some residents have been able to rebuild their homes and move on with their lives. However, for many in the affected areas, the road to recovery has been long and arduous. Even today, many homes are still in a state of disrepair, and residents continue to struggle with the aftermath of the disaster.

I had the opportunity to fly over the areas a year ago and again last week. The footage of the Shackleford area provides a stark comparison between what it looked like a year ago and today.

While some homes have been rebuilt, others remain as concrete slabs, serving as a painful reminder of the catastrophic event that took place and impacted so many Arkansans across the State.

No matter how often I cover severe weather events, I'm always humbled by nature's power. Seeing hundreds of uprooted trees lying flat on the ground and snapped utility poles strewn across the landscape always leaves an indelible mark.

Like many of you, I grew up in an era when we would sit with our dad on the front porch, waiting to see the tornado after Tom Bonner's warning on TV. The sirens would start wailing in the background, adding to the sense of excitement and danger.

Now, we get a heads-up on potential severe weather days in advance thanks to the dedicated meteorologists at the NWS and those delivering the watches and warnings on TV. Thank you for all of your long hours and commitment to saving lives.

It is spring-severe weather season in Arkansas, and it's crucial to remember that preparation is critical. While Thursday's storm in Garland and Saline Counties resulted in only minor injuries and no fatalities, the season is far from over. Many more storms are expected. Know how to get warnings on multiple devices. Have a plan. Be prepared.
