A Great Gray Owl soars over a meadow searching for its next meal. Large snowflakes fall, turning the entire landscape into a snow globe. I can close my eyes and remember everything that happened on this cold, snowy day.

A Great Gray Owl pauses for a minute after capturing prey.

Great Gray Owls will often wait several minutes after capturing prey, then swallow the prey whole, or fly to a nearby perch to consume.

A female Spruce Grouse kicks up snow while pecking at grit. Spruce Grouse use small pebbles to help break down spruce needles and buds, their primary diet.

Taken in late fall of 2021 in Northern Minnesota. After going several months without an owl sighting, it was a wonderful day when we came across this Great Gray Owl along a forest road.

"Surprise Fly By"

This is one I am extremely proud of. Uncropped image of a Great Gray Owl as it flew by very close. Shooting with a 400mm at f/2.8 the depth of field is very narrow. So I was ecstatic when I reviewed the image and it was tack sharp.

"Red Sky at Morning" was taken in early fall of 2018 in Northern Minnesota. Clear skies and looming smoke from Canadian Wildfires paint the perfect conditions for a bright-red sunrise. A Common Loon appears through the thick fog covering the lake as the cool fall air rolls over the warm lake water.

I found this owl hunting roadside before sunrise. Winter owls are often a struggle between high ISO and slower than ideal shutter speed. I tried to meet in the middle with 1/400 sec at f/2.8, ISO 2000. Captured a decently sharp face with blurred wings to show motion.
