Saint Bernard Catholic Church, Akron, OH.

“St. Bernard Catholic Church in Akron, Ohio, established in 1861 for German-speaking immigrants, is a historic Romanesque Revival landmark on the National Register of Historic Places (added 1989). Designed by architect William P. Ginther, the current structure was built between 1902 and 1905, featuring prominent twin bell towers, monochromatic stone, and a rich, decorated interior.”

Two small additions to the Churches of Ohio Archive today, a photograph and postcard.
If you’ve followed this project for awhile you’ll know sometimes I add items to the archive that aren’t particularly church related, the photo here is an example of that.
First item is a beautiful 1909 photo showing the newly completed East Cell Block of the Ohio State Reformatory of Mansfield, OH.
The second item is a beautiful postcard showing Saint Mary Catholic Church of Marietta, OH. (Now, Basilica of Saint Mary of the Assumption)

“The Ascension of The Lord”

A little over a year ago I was granted permission to photograph 15 absolutely breathtaking Pittsburgh Churches. I am extremely happy with how the photos turned out and personally, I can’t believe how much better my photography has gotten since I started this project two and a half years ago.

This window is perhaps one of the most “valuable” windows I’ve photographed, produced by Tiffany Studios of New York this window depicting “The Ascension of The Lord” is an absolute masterpiece. The ascension of the lord is typically a very ornate window and typically one of a churches finest windows. One this that makes this window stand out is its location, Calvary United Methodist Church. It is not a common depiction within the Methodist Church.

*Note the last photo, you’ll see a fine example of why Tiffany Windows are so sought after. You’ll the lines in their clothing aren’t painted, Tiffany would “Fold and Layer” his glass given it a very three dimensional effect.*

Historic Plum Street Temple, Cincinnati, OH.

The Isaac M. Wise Temple was named for its rabbi when it was completed in 1866. The building was done in a Byzantine-Moorish style by architect James Keys Wilson. Today, it still serves as a regular house of worship.
